Episode 4 of The Great British Bake Off aired on October 15 on Channel 4, showcasing the culinary talents of the nine remaining contestants as they battled to create the finest caramel dish to secure the coveted title of star baker for the week.
Unfortunately, after a challenging Caramel Week, Mike was sent home after episode 4. His Coffee Popcorn Mousse Cake did not meet the judges’ expectations. Following his exit, Mike expressed his feelings:
“I believe it was my moment to leave. I’m just a little farmer who enjoys baking at home. The excellence of what everyone else is creating is truly amazing. And yes, I will miss all of them, which is why I’m feeling low. [Crying] My mum once told me, ‘Don’t cry.’

Critique of Mike’s Caramel Biscuits for their shape issues
In the fourth episode of The Great British Bake Off 2024, the bakers faced a series of tasks centered around caramel. For the Signature Challenge, they were tasked with making caramel biscuits, where they were free to choose any flavor, but caramel had to remain the star ingredient.
Mike presented his entries titled “Dad’s Favourite Caramel Biscuits.”He introduced himself as a farm manager, continuing the family legacy of running their farm. He creatively decided to integrate his own homegrown flowers into his caramel biscuit recipe.
However, despite this inventive twist, Judge Paul pointed out the issue of making the biscuits bulge. Although both judges acknowledged that the flavors were pleasant, Prue advised Mike to “mind the bulge”in his biscuits.
Mike ranked 7th in the technical challenge
During the technical challenge, bakers were required to create a Pear Tart Tatin paired with walnut caramel ice cream, a test that demanded precision in timing and pastry execution alongside perfectly cooked pears. The bake rankings concluded as follows:
- Georgie
- Christian
- Sumayah
- Illyin
- Dylan
- Nelly
- Mike
- Gill
- Andy
Mike’s Coffee Popcorn Mousse Cake failed to impress the judges
For the Showstopper challenge in The Great British Bake Off 2024, contestants had to craft a caramel mousse cake featuring at least two varieties of caramel and intricate sugar artwork during episode 4.
After an intense four-and-a-half-hour struggle, Mike managed to complete his Coffee Popcorn Mousse Cake, which gained some praise from Paul for its holiday cake-like appearance.
However, Prue did not hold back her criticism, stating that she felt let down by the lack of mousse. She remarked that she would be disappointed if she were to buy the cake from a bakery.
Other bakers showcased their unique creations, such as:
