The Gang from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Volunteers at Abbott Elementary: Here’s Why

Spoiler alert: This article provides spoilers from Abbott Elementary Season 4, Episode 9, titled “Volunteers.”

The much-anticipated crossover between Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia kicks off at the fictional school featured in the ABC mockumentary. This unique collaboration is a result of a creative partnership between Quinta Brunson, the mastermind behind Abbott Elementary, and Rob McElhenney from It’s Always Sunny. Given the striking differences between the two shows, both in tone and target audience, fans have been buzzing with excitement about how these contrasting worlds might intersect.

Part 1 of this crossover event unfolded on Wednesday, January 8, within Abbott Elementary Season 4, Episode 9. As for Part 2, which will continue the storyline in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17, fans will have to wait until mid-2025, as reported by TODAY.

While Abbott Elementary is more family-friendly, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia caters to an adult audience. This difference necessitated a clever balancing act by the writers in the crossover’s first part, as the characters from It’s Always Sunny had to tone down their trademark antics while maintaining their core personalities. Meanwhile, the cast of Abbott Elementary remained true to their comedic roots, thanks to a plausible scenario that justified the presence of Mac, Dee, Charlie, Dennis, and Frank at the school.

Initially, the characters from Abbott Elementary are oblivious to the real reason behind the It’s Always Sunny crew’s presence at the school. However, when Melissa discovers their connection to Paddy’s Pub, she confronts them. The group admits that they are there under a court order to complete 100 hours of community service, hinting that their goodwill is motivated by legal obligations rather than altruism.

Following a series of reckless actions—including dumping 100 gallons of baby oil, 500 Paddy’s Pub t-shirts, and a Cybertruck into the Schuylkill River—the gang is forced into community service. They must adopt better behavior (as best as any It’s Always Sunny character can manage) to fulfill the court’s requirements, including getting Ava to sign their volunteer slip, especially since they are being filmed.

Why Ava Lets The It’s Always Sunny Gang Stay Despite Their “Criminal”Background

Ava Needs the Help

Ava, played by Janelle James, finds herself in need of assistance. After witnessing Dee’s effective help in Janine’s classroom, Janine argues that they should let the It’s Always Sunny crew stay on. She notes that these individuals are free laborers and that if Ava sends them back, the district might never allocate any resources to their school again. With Mac eager for Ava to sign their volunteer paperwork, he goes to great lengths to impress her.

However, when Mac mentions that he sent thank-you cards to every teacher by the end of this episode, Ava is taken aback. Ultimately, she reluctantly signs their slip and permits them to leave.

In an attempt to ingratiate himself, Mac offers to detail Ava’s car, brings her cinnamon rolls, and more. Ava later confides in Janine that she might concoct a new scheme to keep the gang around by framing them for another crime. Yet, this plan is halted once she decides against it after their previous interactions.
