The Fate of Detective Jay Halstead in Chicago PD: What You Need to Know

Chicago PD is a popular and long-standing television series within NBC’s One Chicago franchise. Since its premiere as a mid-season replacement on January 8, 2014, the show has enjoyed eleven successful seasons and was renewed for a twelfth season on March 21, 2024.

Detective Jay Halstead has been a key character on Chicago PD since the very beginning. The character made his debut in the pilot episode titled Stepping Stone and remained a significant presence on the series until his departure in season 10.

Throughout the series, Jay Halstead served in the Intelligence Unit of Chicago’s 21st District police department. After leaving his role within the unit, he made the decision to re-enlist in the military.

Previously, Jay Halstead was an Army Ranger serving with the United States military’s 3rd battalion, where he was regarded as a top choice for sniper, exhibiting a more reclusive nature.

In season 10, Halstead reached a breaking point while involved in an off-the-books robbery case. During the investigation, a confrontation with a suspect escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in Jay fatally stabbing the perpetrator in self-defense.

This incident significantly impacted Halstead’s self-confidence, despite efforts from Sergeant Hank Voight and Hailey Upton to shield him from repercussions.

After contemplating whether to turn himself in to Police Chief O’Neal, Jay ultimately made the choice to resign from the Chicago Police Intelligence Unit, stating that the ethical complexities of the job had become overwhelming. He opted to return to the military and accept an assignment in Bolivia targeting drug cartels.

When confiding in Hailey about his decision, he expressed:

“It’s black and white, it’s good and bad, it’s right and wrong, and it’s no more of this. I need that. I need that back. I fly out today. It’s not forever; it’s eight months, maybe a little longer.”

His departure from the series was officially confirmed when Hailey discovered that Jay’s overseas assignment had been extended.

In an interview with NBC Insider, showrunner Gwen Sigan discussed the approach taken for Jay Halstead’s exit, saying:

“We all really wanted to do justice for Halstead’s character as best we could — to who he’s been for the show — we really wanted to make that decision to leave his own decision. For it to come from him. It felt important to keep him alive and keep him out in the world trying to do good.”

Hailey Upton was introduced as a member of the Intelligence Unit in season 4 of Chicago PD. Their partnership gradually evolved into a romantic relationship by season 8. By season 9, they were married.

Initially, Jay planned to maintain a long-distance relationship with Hailey after his exit from Chicago PD, but ultimately, they divorced by season 11.

Before Hailey, Jay Halstead was emotionally reserved and focused strictly on his professional duties. Hailey’s presence encouraged him to share details of his difficult upbringing and military experiences. She also urged him to seek therapy for his struggles.

Their romance blossomed throughout season 8, culminating with Upton proposing to Jay in the season 8 finale. Jay accepted her proposal, and they exchanged vows in season 9, episode 9. Their marriage continued until Jay’s resignation at the start of season 10.

Regrettably, the couple could not sustain their long-distance relationship, as Hailey eventually removed her wedding ring in season 10, episode 20.

Chicago PD is available for viewing on NBC and Peacock.
