The Evolution of the Mona Lisa in Netflix’s Family Pack: An Explanation

The French adventure-comedy film Family Pack (titled Loups-garous in French) premiered on October 23, 2024. Helmed by director François Uzan, this cinematic piece draws inspiration from the popular French card game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow.

In this whimsical narrative, the film follows a family who, while enjoying their board game, unexpectedly gets transported to a medieval realm. This world, however, presents a challenge—menacing werewolves threaten their safety, and the only way to return to reality is to conquer these supernatural foes.

Family Pack is filled with surprising twists that inject humor and excitement into the storyline. A notable revelation occurs at the film’s conclusion when it is disclosed that Piero, who aids Jerome and his family on their quest, is actually Leonardo da Vinci. Upon returning to their original world, Jerome and his family realize that the iconic painting of the Mona Lisa now strikingly resembles Jerome himself.

A Twist on the Iconic Mona Lisa

As Jerome and his family navigate the fantastical medieval landscape, they come to understand the unique abilities tied to their game cards. A surprising twist occurs when they learn that **Louise** has transformed into a werewolf within this peculiar universe.

In essence, while each family member gains powers reflective of their assigned cards, Louise finds herself on the opposing side as a werewolf antagonist.

The family must shield Louise from the village sheriff, who is relentlessly hunting down werewolves and punishing anyone found even slightly suspicious. Concurrently, they cannot ignore their own obligation to track down the other werewolves if they wish to escape the game’s clutches.

Piero, characterized as an inventive and eclectic gay scientist, painter, and inventor, assists Jerome and his group in their endeavors. When Marie is wrongfully accused of witchcraft—an all-too-common fate for literate women in medieval settings—Piero steps in to help rescue her from captivity.

In the film’s closing scenes, Jerome expresses heartfelt gratitude to Piero for his invaluable support. Their dynamic reveals Piero’s growing fondness for Jerome, as he mentions that Jerome ignited his creativity and urged him to embrace his full name.

When curious about Piero’s full identity, Jerome discovers he is Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci. Jerome gazes at Piero in astonishment, humbly requesting his ancestor to procure all his future artworks.

The film concludes with the revelation that Jerome’s ancestor honored his request, highlighting that the famous Mona Lisa originally belonged to Jerome’s family before it was bequeathed to the Louvre Museum.

As Jerome’s wife comments on her preference for the original Mona Lisa’s features, the scene shifts to the updated painting, now bearing a remarkable likeness to Jerome. He playfully quips to his wife that she is merely envious.
