On Pokémon Day 2025, The Pokémon Company revealed an exciting new trailer for their upcoming exclusive Nintendo Switch title, Pokémon Legends: Z-A. This announcement marks the first time fans will revisit Lumiose City from the Kalos region since its introduction in the 2013 games, Pokémon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS. Set in the timeline following the events of those acclaimed titles, players will embark on a journey through an evolved Lumiose City, starting with three beloved Pokémon: Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile. Throughout the adventure, trainers will encounter both familiar faces and fresh characters, including the intriguing character of AZ, a 3, 000-year-old man whose role significantly diverges from his previous appearance.
The Backstory of AZ in Pokémon X and Y

In the plotline of Pokémon X and Y, players traverse the Kalos region, aspire to become Champion, and thwart the villainous schemes of Team Flare. While questing, players are often reminded of a historic war that devastated the region. Although the intricate details of this conflict remain shrouded in mystery, stories persist about a formidable weapon that sought to conclude the war, deeply affecting the kingdom’s past.
During the adventure, trainers first meet AZ, a tall, unkempt figure near Route 13 close to the Kalos Power Plant. He speaks cryptically of a flower Pokémon renowned for granting eternal life, thus positioning himself as a significant part of Kalos’ lore.
AZ’s Tragic Journey and Redemption
As the narrative unfolds, Team Flare gains control of segments of Kalos, leading to AZ’s capture by Lysandre, the organization’s leader. Lysandre attempts to harness the power of the ultimate weapon, intending to annihilate those outside his organization and restore the world to his vision of beauty. Through confrontation in Lysandre Labs, AZ reveals the poignant truth behind the war and his relationship with the ultimate weapon.
Long ago, AZ had a cherished Floette, his partner Pokémon, which perished in the conflict. Consumed by sorrow, AZ constructed the ultimate weapon to revive his beloved Floette, using the lives of other Pokémon in the process. Although he achieved this resurrection, vengeance consumed him, leading to widespread destruction. His dear Floette, disillusioned by AZ’s actions, abandoned him, leaving the former king to wander alone for millennia. Ultimately, when faced with the choice to abandon his vengeance, AZ engages in a climactic battle with the player after they become Champion. His mortality is symbolized by the reunion with Floette, illustrating his journey from despair to reconciliation with love for Pokémon.
Notably, many Pokémon scholars posit that the ultimate weapon’s connection to Xerneas and Yveltal’s powers may have catalyzed the emergence of Mega Evolution.
AZ’s Transformation in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Fast forward 3, 000 years, and AZ has transitioned from a king to the proprietor of Hotel Z, situated within the bustling Lumiose City. Accompanied by Floette, he now welcomes travelers and trainers alike, providing a central hub for players as they embark on their adventures. As this game unfolds primarily in Lumiose City, Hotel Z will function as the players’ base of operations following their journey from an unknown location.
AZ is not alone in this new role; the hotel also features Urbain/Taunie, a character who enjoys assisting others and engaging in Pokémon battles. Interestingly, the absence of Professor Sycamore or other Pokémon professors suggests AZ may step into a mentorship role for players, similar to past titles. It is conceivable that AZ will provide players with their starting Pokémon, fostering a deep connection with the city’s revitalization efforts. With Urbain/Taunie also having a starter Pokémon, AZ’s involvement could enhance the collaborative spirit in their mission to restore the city.
Furthermore, AZ might serve as a source of knowledge about Kalos’ rich history and lore, perfectly aligned with the game’s focus on engaging deeply with the city’s grounds and the surrounding areas.
