The first season of The Diplomat on Netflix wrapped up with a significant cliffhanger that has left fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming second season. Viewers will remember that the season finale culminated in a catastrophic explosion, mirroring an earlier incident from the season.
The closing episode of The Diplomat season 1 did not fully reveal how the explosion impacted those involved, nor did it clarify who was behind the event. However, it hinted at the presumed death of Kate Wyler’s estranged spouse, Hal Wyler, as flames engulfed the vehicle he shared with his colleagues.
On October 8, 2024, the release of the trailer for The Diplomat season 2 alleviated some concerns, indicating that Hal had sustained serious injuries but had not perished. The trailer also provided a peek into the dynamic between Kate and Hal, showcasing their authentic, somewhat contentious relationship.
What unfolded in the season 1 finale of The Diplomat?
As previously noted, the last episode of The Diplomat season 1 concluded with a dramatic explosion involving the former U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, Hal Wyler, and two of his associates.
This explosion erupted just as Kate was closing in on the identity of the individual responsible for an earlier blast on a British ship, which resulted in multiple military casualties during the season’s pilot. She had pieced together evidence suggesting that British Prime Minister Trowbridge orchestrated the explosion.
However, before she could relay this critical information to Hal or anyone else, the explosion occurred, endangering the lives of Hal, Stuart, and Ronnie in the process.
Is Hal alive after the occurrences in The Diplomat season 1?
It appears that Hal Wyler has survived the aftermath of The Diplomat’s first season. Although the explosion during the finale seemed lethal, it seems Hal and the others managed to escape with injuries.
This survival was confirmed in the trailer for season 2, depicting Hal injured but alive in a hospital setting, consistent with what you’d expect after such a violent incident. On October 18, 2024, Tudum also affirmed Hal’s survival in their publications.
Regarding the pivotal explosion, creator Debora Cahn shared with Netflix’s Tudum:
“I aimed for this moment to leave the audience hungry for more. It was my intent to intertwine the multiple layers of political and personal dynamics with an event that causes everything to unravel simultaneously.”
Rufus Sewell, who portrays Hal Wyler, reinforced Cahn’s remarks, stating:
“What I know is if we settle things too quickly, we’ll be in trouble. I’d like to think there are enough complications to sustain us for several more seasons.”
Season 1 of The Diplomat undoubtedly left several questions unanswered. The second season will likely delve deeper into these unfinished storylines while introducing new chaos, as indicated by its trailer. Viewers can expect the season premiere on October 31, 2024.
