Warning: Spoilers for Titans #19
The Titans have solidified their reputation as one of the foremost superhero teams within the DC Universe. However, a significant concern looms within the group: the fan-favorite hero, Raven, is struggling to manage her powers. As her empathy spirals out of control, Raven’s instability poses a threat not only to her fellow Titans but also to the entire world she strives to protect.
In Titans #19, creatively crafted by John Layman, Serg Acuña, Matt Herms, and Wes Abbott, the Titans try to savor a serene snow day. Unfortunately, Arsenal voices his concerns about Raven, alarming his teammates. He tells Nightwing and Donna Troy that her instability makes her “a liability”in the field.

While Arsenal’s statement may strike a chord with some, his teammates may not appreciate his candidness. Raven’s erratic powers indeed risk jeopardizing the entire DC Universe, a concern that has been echoed in various storylines over the years.
Raven’s Power Struggles: A Growing Liability for the Titans
Emotional Turmoil: Raven’s Vulnerability Intensified

Raven has always exhibited enhanced empathy, allowing her to resonate with the feelings of others deeply. However, the current arc reveals a malfunction in her abilities, leading her to experience intense emotional fluctuations involuntarily. In Titans #18, Raven unexpectedly lashes out during a minor dispute among her teammates, revealing her fragile emotional state. Her behavior becomes even more concerning when she displays inconsolable emotions amidst critical battles, indicating she is in no condition to contribute effectively.
Arsenal’s argument about Raven’s detrimental influence is not unfounded. The vulnerability of her powers has made her susceptible to manipulation. As evidenced in previous issues, Roy adeptly takes advantage of her emotional instability to guide her actions. If Raven’s teammates can exploit her weaknesses, it’s reasonable to assume her adversaries could do much worse. It’s essential for the Titans to consider Arsenal’s warning seriously, recognizing that Raven’s current state may indeed pose a genuine risk.
Emotional Instability Rooted in Dark Transformations
The Dark-Winged Queen: A New Threat Emerges

Raven’s transformation into the Dark-Winged Queen marks a critical juncture in her character arc. This incarnation results from the separation of her demonic side from her core being, leading to the emergence of an evil persona. The villainous Raven deceives her fellow Titans, absorbing the powers of her brothers and the Spectre, subsequently showcasing a range of formidable magic. This transformation reflects the internal struggle and the dark potential that resides within her.

While Raven’s dark journey doesn’t define her forever, there are significant ramifications. Beast Boy plays a crucial role in reintegrating Raven, encouraging her to unify her split personas for enhanced power while bringing back her White Raven form. Nevertheless, this newly merged state leaves her emotions in disarray, leading to subsequent crises just as past ones are resolved.
A History of Endangerment: Raven vs. the Titans
Conflicted Ally: From Friend to Foe

Despite her cherished status among fans and fellow Titans, Raven’s history is marked by betrayals and conflicts. The significant influence of her father, Trigon, a powerful demon, dramatically impacts her character. With each encounter, Raven finds herself caught in the struggle between loyalty to her friends and the dark lure of her lineage. Her interactions with Trigon have resulted in numerous episodes where she turns against her teammates, forcing them into conflict.
Several confrontations demonstrate Raven’s prowess, with instances where her powers, amplified by her dark affiliations, nearly bring her teammates to their knees. In one notable example from Superman/Batman #61, even Superman acknowledges her overwhelming abilities demonstrated while she was under external control. This consistent vulnerability creates a cycle wherein her allies must confront her as an enemy, overshadowing the positive contributions she makes.
The Looming Threat: Raven’s Disturbing Path
Revisiting Raven’s Role: Should the Titans Part Ways?

Even after Raven ultimately defeats Trigon in the “Dark-Winged Queen”storyline, her presence remains a perilous wild card. With her emotional state crumbling, new adversaries are stepping into the void left by her father’s demise, but with equally nefarious intentions. The return of Psycho-Pirate, notorious for exploiting emotions and fostering paranoia, signals new dangers on the horizon for Raven and the Titans alike.
As the Titans navigate these new threats, a pressing question arises: Would their mission be safer without Raven? Her magical capabilities are undeniably valuable; however, the detriments of her involvement arguably overshadow the benefits. As Arsenal’s concerns echo through the team, it may be time to reevaluate Raven’s position. Unless she can gain control over her emotions and powers, maintaining her status on the roster could spell disaster for the Titans.
