
As excitement builds for the next installment in the Gears of War series, titled Gears of War: E-Day, players are set to experience the early stages of the Locust War. In this upcoming game, they will once again embody the beloved characters, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, as they confront the Locust threat for the very first time. However, there’s potential for The Coalition to deepen the lore by exploring a lesser-known faction, the Union of Independent Republics (UIR), during this prequel narrative.
Understanding the Union of Independent Republics in Gears of War


The backstory of Sera, the fictional planet within the Gears of War universe, mirrors much of Earth’s history. Civilization on Sera evolved from feudal and monarchal systems to modern nation-states, with industrial upheavals prominent along the way. Initially, the economy relied heavily on coal and oil until a groundbreaking discovery—Imulsion—emerged roughly 100 years prior to Emergence Day. This potent energy source sparked conflicts among nations, leading to the establishment of the UIR as a coalition of less fortunate nations striving against the affluent, socialist Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG).
For nearly eight decades, the COG and UIR were embroiled in fierce conflicts, termed the Pendulum Wars. Both factions tailored unique military capabilities, including weapons, vehicles, and technology. The UIR produced formidable assets such as turret-equipped APCs, the robust Pariah main-battle tanks, agile Khimera attack helicopters, and notably, the Hammer of Dawn satellites. Meanwhile, UIR soldiers, often known as “Indies, ”donned distinctive armor, with some clad in dark repurposed COG Gear armor, utilizing weapons like Markza Rifles and Booshka Grenade Launchers. Specialized military units, such as UIR Cosmonauts and Elite troops, played crucial roles on the battlefield.
The Downfall and Legacy of the UIR
Just two years ahead of Emergence Day, a pivotal event unfolded during the Battle of Aspho Fields, where COG commandos under Major Victor Hoffman seized Hammer of Dawn technology from the UIR. This acquisition proved critical, allowing Adam Fenix to enhance the technology. The COG subsequently issued threats of total destruction, pushing most UIR factions to capitulate, although the Republic of Gorasnaya continued its resistance, attempting to launch its own Hammer of Dawn satellites only to be thwarted by COG countermeasures.
After six weeks of uneasy peace, the landscape changed dramatically with the Locust’s emergence, which resulted in immense casualties for both UIR and COG forces. In the aftermath, many UIR combatants joined the COG through the Open Arms Program to partake in the reconstruction of a war-torn world. Much of the UIR’s tale, alongside the Pendulum Wars, is explored in various Gears of War media, including the novel Gears of War: Aspho Fields and the accompanying comic book series.
Envisioning the UIR’s Role in Gears of War: E-Day

Matt Searcy, the Creative Director for Gears of War: E-Day, has announced that the narrative will encompass more than just Emergence Day, extending over several subsequent days and delving into events prior to the invasion. This presents an exciting opportunity to depict one of the final clashes between the COG and UIR at the start of the game. By contrasting the UIR’s principles with the malevolence of the Locust, players could gain a more comprehensive understanding of this faction’s dynamics.
The initial gameplay could mimic the structure seen in Gears of War 4, featuring UIR forces as early antagonists for several chapters. Eventually, as the Locust threat escalates, this transition would lead to a deeper narrative. Moreover, developers could introduce a variety of UIR enemies and vehicles to enhance the gameplay. Imagine Marcus and Dom commandeering a Pariah tank during an intense encounter! This inclusion would provide a fresh gameplay experience and further diversify the PVP multiplayer and Horde Mode options, marrying innovation with familiar elements.
