The Confusing Sir Storyline in Found Season 2: A Distraction from the Show’s Core Strengths

The Confusing Sir Storyline in Found Season 2: A Distraction from the Show’s Core Strengths

Found originally captured viewers’ attention as a gripping investigative procedural, centered on Gabrielle “Gabi” Mosely—a kidnapping survivor who assembles a crisis management team to locate missing individuals often overlooked by society. Yet, as the show ventured into its second season, the gripping narrative appears to have been overshadowed. In season 1, Gabi harbored a dark secret: she imprisoned Sir, her captor from her teenage years, in her basement, seeking his input in helping solve missing person cases. While her team at Mosely & Associates viewed her as a savior, Gabi’s revelation of Sir’s existence disrupted their trust and camaraderie following his escape.

The concept of Gabi holding Sir captive presents a compelling moral dilemma, as Sir is clearly beyond redemption. However, the focus on Sir’s backstory has increasingly overshadowed the diverse and essential cases that distinguished the first season. In season 2, the narrative feels more elaborate and melodramatic, straying from its procedural roots, with the cast hinting at even darker developments ahead.

Challenges in Retaining the Core Premise of Found

An Imbalance Towards Sir’s Storyline in Season 2

One of Found’s greatest strengths was its dedication to exploring the narratives of victims often marginalized in mainstream media. The first season effectively tackled critical issues such as immigration, the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities within the foster care system, and mental health concerns among the unhoused population. The tension created by Gabi’s captivity of Sir served to elevate the storyline without overshadowing the week-to-week victim narratives. However, after Sir’s escape, this focus shifted, leaving the core themes of season 1 less emphasized.

Gabi’s confession about holding Sir hostage shattered the trust within her team, further detracting from their focus on missing persons cases. In the first few episodes of season 2, Sir abducted Lacey Quinn, Gabi’s surrogate sister, exacerbating the plot’s tension. It was anticipated that the series would transition back to its original case-of-the-week format; however, this was not the case. Instead, Sir’s storyline continued to expand, introducing Christian Evans, Sir’s brother, as a new character who complicates matters by playing both sides.

Sir’s claim that he would “fix” Gabi’s team, allowing her the freedom to join him, promised a potential shift in the show’s direction. This could have paved the way for him to assist Margaret Reed in finding her missing son or to aid Zeke in overcoming his agoraphobia. However, by the middle of season 2, Sir has primarily deepened the trauma of Lacey and Zeke instead of offering any real help. Sir maintains that Gabi will come willingly with him to Europe, despite her fervent hostility towards him, revealing a delusion in his expectations.

New episodes of Found air every Thursday at 10 p.m. Eastern on NBC and can be streamed the following day on Peacock. The recent episode, season 2, episode 10 titled “Missing While Outed, ”features Sir in conversation with an undisclosed associate, hinting at a complex escalation of his storyline in the latter half of the season. With the threat of Gabi’s potential arrest now reduced and the M&A team finally collaborating effectively, the series may regain its focus on the vital stories of disenfranchised victims, reminiscent of its impactful first season.
