The Captain served as a military leader guiding an expedition towards the North with the aim of rebuilding the British Empire after a devastating global climate catastrophe. To fully appreciate the Captain’s character and background, it’s crucial to understand the setting prior to the events of Frostpunk 2.

In the late 1880s, a severe climate disaster plunged the world into an unending winter. In response, the remnants of the British government devised a strategy to dispatch military and civilian groups to the abundant coal deposits in the North Pole. This site would serve both as a base of operations and as a source of fuel for the large Generators—essential devices capable of heating and powering entire cities.

Prior to his expedition to the North Pole, the Captain was just an ordinary soldier. The experiences in New London transformed him from a regular military man into a symbol of Hope, revered almost like a deity.

The Captain’s primary mission involved leading an expedition to establish a settlement close to the Generator located in a crater southwest of Winterhome—a city that players can either inhabit or salvage in Frostpunk 2. He arrived aboard a Land Dreadnought, the wrecks of which become a vital source of Generator power and fuel in Frostpunk 2.

Upon reaching the vicinity of Winterhome, the Captain initiated the founding of New London within the crater near the Generator’s site. He assumed command of his small team, and through sheer determination, he successfully restarted the dormant Generator, providing heat to the surrounding area. He organized continuous shifts, constructed shelters, and effectively resurrected the barren Generator into the framework of what would evolve into New London.

As time progressed, the Captain and his men were joined by more survivors. After deploying signal balloons, New London witnessed a significant influx of newcomers. This surge emphasized the pressing needs for heating and food, prompting scouts to venture into the frost-bitten landscape in search of other communities or settlements.

During their expeditions, the scouts stumbled upon the remains of defunct American and British Generator cities, where thousands perished from the cold. Even Winterhome, once a beacon of hope, had collapsed—leaving New London as the only city defying the Frost.

What transpired before the appearance of the Captain in Frostpunk 2?

As time advanced within Frostpunk 1, players were presented with two routes—enforce strict order and discipline or create a new faith that revered the Generators, cultivating a profound loyalty to the city. This evolution led to the rise of the Stalwarts, emerging from the Captain’s vision of stability and his deep-seated belief that the city was paramount.

His actions elevated him to a messiah-like figure within New London, guiding its inhabitants toward a brighter path. However, the decline can be traced back to the Great Storm, during which the Captain resorted to brutal tactics, such as overworking miners to death and pressuring workers to gather resources amidst whiteouts.

This downslide was further complicated by the Stalwarts, who morphed from a simplistic faith into a militarized enforcer group modeled after the Captain’s authoritarian regime. His mismanagement during a plague following the Great Storm significantly damaged his relationship with the citizenry.

The culmination of this unrest occurred at Outpost 11, where his tyrannical conduct sparked rebellion among the inhabitants. The Captain ultimately became the unseen antagonist in the final DLC of Frostpunk 1 titled On The Edge.

In Frostpunk 2, players encounter a research facility filled with the bodies of Stalwart soldiers; a concerning narrative further evident in the Stalwarts’ request to conceal the incident from public knowledge, illuminating the Captain’s dark history in Frostpunk 2.

Although the details regarding the Captain’s fate between Frostpunk 1 and his appearance in Frostpunk 2 remain ambiguous, the epilogue offers valuable insights. The sequel begins with a woman pushing an elderly man in a wheelchair, who narrates his past experiences. This man is revealed to be the Captain from the previous game, who was managed by players in the initial installment.

Throughout his narration, the Captain recounts his journey to the North Pole and how he established a base for survival. The woman, referred to as the Steward, informs the Captain that the survival phase has concluded, and it’s now imperative to expand their territory. As the largest colony in the Frostlands, they face the challenge of reconstructing society. The Steward lead the Captain to a large window, allowing him to gaze upon the city he nurtured.

Ultimately, the Steward leads the Captain into the harsh cold, where the Frost envelops him, sealing his fate indefinitely. This poignant ending has sparked debate among players; some argue that his demise signifies a symbolic end, while the Steward may represent death itself, marking both the conclusion of an era and the dawn of a new beginning, thereby sealing the Captain’s fate in Frostpunk 2.

Conversely, some imaginative fans suggest that the Steward plays the role of reformer, stepping in to terminate the Captain’s chaotic rule in light of the desolation facing New London. This is substantiated by the player’s primary task as the Steward in Frostpunk 2: to restart the Generator and seek a fresh fuel source.

No matter the interpretation, the conclusion remains the same—the Captain in Frostpunk 2 has perished, leading players to assume the role of the Steward, ensuring the survival of the city, much like they did as the Captain in Frostpunk 1.
