Recently, speculation surfaced regarding Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, potentially retiring in 2025. However, she has decisively dispelled these rumors, and her decision to remain at the helm of Lucasfilm is, undoubtedly, a positive development for the iconic studio.

With an impressive legacy as a producer on classics such as E. T. and the Indiana Jones franchise, Kennedy brings invaluable experience to her role. Her close collaborations with influential filmmakers like George Lucas uniquely position her to carry on the rich legacy of Lucasfilm, regardless of the persistent criticism from certain factions of the fan community.

In a recent interview, Kennedy emphatically stated, “The truth is, and I want to just say loud and clear, I am not retiring. I will never retire from movies. I will die making movies.” This revelation has sparked excitement among supporters while leaving critics disappointed.

The controversy surrounding Kennedy is partly fueled by her commitment to diversifying the narratives within the Star Wars universe. Though the push for inclusivity has not always been met with success, it is disheartening to observe the online vitriol directed at actors like John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, and Daisy Ridley for merely being part of the franchise. Regrettably, Lucasfilm had not previously condemned the harassment these individuals faced.

However, in the case of Moses Ingram during the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Lucasfilm finally took a stand against the backlash she experienced. Unfortunately, this situation spiraled into further criticism aimed at Kennedy for promoting more inclusive storytelling. Phrases like “The Force is Female” should not elicit outrage, yet they have led to significant negativity directed towards Kennedy and the women involved in the franchise.

The recurring calls to “get rid of Kennedy” or the false assertions of her impending retirement may reflect a troubling undercurrent of sexism. Is the dissatisfaction rooted in the presence of women in Star Wars films really justifiable?
