With a proven track record in game development, 11-Bit Studios continues to impress with its latest title, The Alters. Players should be prepared for a complex gaming experience that requires intricate management skills and quick decision-making, especially when facing challenges such as the Anomalies.
Anomalies are essentially passive-hostile entities that can raise your radiation levels upon contact while navigating the diverse terrains of the planet during each act. Fortunately, players have a powerful tool at their disposal: the Luminator Torch.
In this guide, I will outline how to create the Luminator and effectively utilize it to eliminate Anomalies, allowing for a safer exploration of the game’s surface without being hindered by these gelatinous foes.
Crafting the Luminator
You can unlock the ability to craft the Luminator early in the first act through the Strange Phenomena sub-quest. Ensure you have created Jan Scientist, as he will guide you through the process of unlocking this crucial equipment and help you learn about Planetary Samples.
You will receive this quest during your initial encounter with the Anomalies, with your first task being to locate an Alter who has information on them. If Jan Scientist is already on your team, head directly to him and share what you’ve discovered.
Watch out for clusters of Anomalies situated near the location known as the Internal Vein and proceed with caution to avoid radiation buildup.
For the next phase of the quest, search for more strange phenomena by going to the Internal Vein, which can be identified by the question mark icon on the northern section of the map, close to the Organics Deposit. Investigate this distorted formation and report your findings back to Jan Scientist.

After a successful report, Jan Scientist will require you to study the Internal Analysis Tool in the lab. Once you complete this research, return to him to receive instructions on his latest invention—the Luminator.
Neutralizing Anomalies
Upon successfully crafting the Luminator, you can now destroy most Anomalies encountered during your exploratory missions, provided you have sufficient battery charges.Aim and charge the Luminator at the core of the Anomalies from a safe distance to eliminate them quickly.
As you progress into Act 2 and beyond, pay attention to the erratic patterns of the Anomaly cores to optimize battery usage while dismantling them.
Defeated Anomalies will yield ALX material cores that you can refine back at your base, transforming them into essential general materials. However, exercise caution when using the Luminator, as it consumes considerable battery power—potentially depleting a whole bar for one Anomaly.

If you want to enhance your efficiency while taking down Anomalies, it is advisable to invest in Luminator research upgrades, highlighted above. These upgrades allow you to intensify the light beam density, resulting in quicker neutralization of Anomalies.
Obtaining Planetary Samples
Planetary Samples are valuable commodities that unlock advanced research nodes at your base. Due to their rarity, it is crucial to use these samples judiciously. Fortunately, the process of obtaining your first sample through the Luminator is straightforward.
To collect Planetary Samples in The Alters, aim your Luminator at the initial formations found in the Internal Vein. This action will create a trail of anomalies leading you to the core at their base. Be sure to aim carefully and charge the Luminator at it to ignite and obtain a Planetary Sample.
For your initial Planetary Sample in Act 1, I highly recommend acquiring the Radiation Repulsor advanced research. This upgrade will significantly enhance the efficiency of your Radiation Filters, minimizing the frequency of replacements needed.
