It turns out that SM-33 possesses knowledge about a map leading to At Attin, which is concealed alongside the treasure of his former captain, Tak Rennod. This leads our crew on a quest to the mysterious Skull Ridge Mountain. However, their journey unveils a surprise: the mountain has transformed into a neutral planet known as Lanupa.

This revelation complicates matters, as Lanupa turns out to be anything but the ideal hideout for a pirate. It resembles a lavish resort, and Jod, eager for adventure, plans to spend their remaining credits in a bid to locate Rennod’s treasure. An unexpected twist arises when Jod must bring Fern, portrayed by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and her team along, as only Fern holds authority over SM-33, making her the de facto captain.

Chaos ensues when Jod is recognized by another pirate who calls him Dash Zentin. This encounter escalates the tension, urging Jod to hasten their exit from Lanupa. As the story unfolds, it becomes evident that a band of pirates is on his tail. This narrative twist leads to a compelling question: why hasn’t the Star Wars franchise explored pirate themes in greater depth? While previous installments featured pirate-like elements, particularly through characters such as Han Solo, Skeleton Crew demonstrates the exhilarating synergy between these two storytelling realms.

From its very first episode, Skeleton Crew boldly establishes its pirate-centric theme, drawing clever parallels to classic tales like Peter Pan with references to the character Smee. The show successfully captures the adventurous essence reminiscent of The Goonies, making it an ideal canvas for a space pirate narrative rich with treasure and intrigue.

This incorporation of pirate lore is particularly refreshing. One of the initial concerns was whether the show would abandon its captivating premise too quickly. Thankfully, the opposite has emerged; Skeleton Crew continues to delve deeper into the piracy angle while remaining steadily anchored in its unique Star Wars ambience.
