In recent years, social media has been captivated by the rise of short-form video content. However, Shuffles, a unique application by Pinterest, seeks to revitalize the art of collage-making, presenting an innovative way to create, share, and connect. Let’s explore the features and creative potential that Shuffles brings to the table.
Overview of Shuffles
Shuffles is a distinctive social application developed by Pinterest, blending elements from popular platforms like Instagram and TikTok while establishing its own unique footprint in the social media sphere. This app empowers users to craft intricate collages, offering a diverse array of creative tools that extend far beyond the capabilities of Instagram.
One of the standout features of Shuffles is its seamless integration with Pinterest, allowing users to access their saved images instantly for collage creation. Users can either explore a library of pre-made cutouts or unleash their creativity by designing custom cutouts directly within the app, all without needing additional software.
Originally launched exclusively for iOS, Shuffles has successfully expanded its reach to Android devices, although a web version is still in the pipeline.
How to Create a Collage with Shuffles
My journey with collages began in high school after discovering the dreamlike creations of artists like Max Ernst and Man Ray. It wasn’t until I encountered Shuffles that I realized I could experiment with collage-making myself. This app has transformed into an enjoyable evening ritual for me, serving as a relaxing creative outlet.
To kick off your collage-making adventure, open the app and tap the prominent purple + button located at the bottom menu.

You’ll be presented with a blank canvas – explore the options at the bottom menu to start populating it with various elements and objects.

Begin by adding images directly from your camera or gallery. Select a photo that prominently features a subject, and Shuffles will swiftly generate a cutout. Simply press Add to canvas to place it on your collage.

If you prefer, you can also browse a gallery of cutouts uploaded by other users by tapping the button with a price tag. You can explore various categories, including Trending and Popular Brands, to enhance your collage with consumer products.

The smiley face button directs you to a hashtag-organized cutout library, simplifying the process of finding cutouts labeled with themes like #80s.

Additionally, you can access your collection of saved Pinterest images directly within Shuffles to create personalized cutouts.

Enhance your collages further by incorporating text and doodles for added flair.

After adding elements to your canvas, you can reposition them by dragging or resize them using a pinch-to-zoom gesture.
Editing Cutouts
To modify a cutout, simply tap on it to access the editing menu. Here, you can refine its shape using the Shape tool.

Moreover, you can adjust the cutout’s opacity, add borders, or apply filters to achieve your desired look.

A particularly exciting feature is the ability to animate cutouts with various effects, adding an engaging twist to your creations.

Understanding Layers
Every cutout you introduce to your collage functions as an independent layer, enabling you to layer elements creatively and prioritize specific cutouts.
To manage layers, press and hold a cutout until a slider appears on the right, which you can drag upwards to adjust layering order.

The right side of the screen offers options for hiding, deleting, or duplicating layers as needed.
Setting the Background
Shuffles defaults to a plain white canvas. To modify the background, tap on the white area to access a color selection menu. A pipette tool is also available to sample colors from your cutouts.

If you prefer a customized image as your backdrop, add it first to the canvas and stretch it to cover the entire area. Next, tap on the background to reveal the editing options and select Lock to secure it in place.

Now you can arrange your cutouts atop the locked background seamlessly.

When you’re satisfied with your design, don’t forget to share your collage with the world.
Comparing Shuffles and Instagram
For fans of Instagram looking for a refreshing alternative, Shuffles provides an engaging platform to explore. Users transitioning from Instagram will find the interface familiar, easing into the experience.
Each collage you create is displayed on your profile, which shares a striking resemblance to Instagram’s design, complete with a profile picture, username, and follower/following count prominently displayed.

Your content feed is positioned below your profile information, and you can easily toggle between viewing Drafts, Private, and Public posts.
The collage viewing screen draws inspiration from TikTok and the Instagram Reel feed, presenting options to Like, Comment, Remix, or Share on the right side. Users can navigate through posts by swiping up or down.

Additionally, recently posted collages appear in bubbles at the top of the screen for quick access.
As with any social media platform, Shuffles features a feed showcasing posts from other users, creating opportunities to discover new creators. This feed resembles Instagram’s Discovery section, offering thumbnails in a grid format instead of the traditional vertical layout. There’s also a dedicated feed for content by the accounts you follow.

In summary, if you’re yearning for a break from Instagram’s overload of Reels, Shuffles could be the refreshing alternative you’ve been seeking.
Exploring Alternatives to Shuffles
If you’re looking for other mobile options for creating collages, Instagram’s Stories feature can serve a similar purpose. Through its interface, you can easily set a background and incorporate stickers from Instagram’s extensive library. Custom stickers are also an option; however, they lack the customization abilities offered by Shuffles.
A compelling alternative is the InShot app, which features a built-in cutout function that simplifies the process of creating clippings from your photos.
While collage-making is a fun pastime, for those ready to dive deeper into creative projects, consider exploring some advanced online photo editing tools.
