Although the first installment of Den of Thieves garnered impressive success and sparked significant anticipation for a sequel, it has taken a lengthy seven years for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera to finally reach audiences. This delay is attributed to a series of real-world challenges. Christian Gudegast, the writer-director from the original film, returns to guide this exciting sequel, which follows Gerard Butler’s character, Big Nick, as he pursues O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Donnie Wilson. This time, Wilson is planning an audacious heist inspired by the infamous 2003 Antwerp diamond heist, now set against the backdrop of Europe.
The cast of Den of Thieves 2 is impressive, featuring not only Butler and Jackson but also Antonio Bustorff, Cristian Solimeno, and Dino Kelly. The original film premiered on January 19, 2018, and the sequel is set to debut almost exactly seven years later, on January 10, 2025. Expect the sequel to maintain the original’s thrilling pace, with a conclusion that promises to exceed even the surprising twist of its predecessor.
Den of Thieves 2: A Journey Marked by Delays
A Sequel Confronted by Unforeseen Challenges
The box office performance of Den of Thieves created immediate interest for a sequel, yet the journey to create Den of Thieves 2 has been fraught with obstacles. Gudegast has openly discussed these setbacks, citing “the state of the world”as a principal factor behind the film’s prolonged development. Notably, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the film industry, resulting in numerous production delays.
Once the pandemic subsided, an injury to one of the lead actors delayed production by an additional nine months. Following recovery, plans for filming in Belgrade and Croatia were thwarted when the conflict in Ukraine created housing shortages due to an influx of refugees. Consequently, the production had to pivot their plans to a shoot in France, only to encounter economic hurdles related to fluctuating exchange rates, prompting further adjustments.

The producers recognized there were still compelling stories to be told within this universe, and Gudegast remained motivated to bring his vision to life after all this time.
