The Andrew Garfield Spider-Man Legacy: What Happened to Amazing Spider-Man 3?
The Spider-Man fan community largely agrees on a few points: Andrew Garfield excelled in his role as Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell short of expectations, and the blame for its failures does not lie with Garfield. Key obstacles hindered the sequel’s success, including the controversial decision to abruptly end the character of Gwen Stacy, portrayed by Emma Stone, after just two films. In today’s cinematic landscape, this narrative choice seemed outdated and ultimately detrimental.
Facing unfavorable reviews and disappointing box office returns created turmoil behind the scenes. Although The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was slated for release on June 10, 2016, that date came and went without any manifestation of the anticipated sequel.
Speculation Surrounding the Abandoned Sequel
For years, fans have speculated about what could have transpired in this elusive third installment. Plans included a storyline depicting Peter Parker’s profound grief following Gwen’s death. In a 2014 interview, director Marc Webb indicated that this emotional struggle would significantly influence the film’s narrative arc. Notably, the return of Norman Osborn, played by Chris Cooper, was also rumored, despite the character’s apparent demise in the previous film. This speculation was somewhat validated by Cooper himself, who stated that a scene featuring Norman’s severed head, still conscious, was filmed but ultimately scrapped from the final cut of the second movie.
Additionally, the previous installment hinted at the emergence of the Sinister Six, further complicating the storyline that could have been explored in a third film.
The Script That Never Was
Recently, one of the writers of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Alex Kurtzman, shed light on the situation by acknowledging that they never actually wrote a script for the third installment. Kurtzman, alongside collaborators Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner, only took part in the scripting of the sequel. As he told Screen Rant, “You know, we never wrote it. We never wrote it. I did 2 and that was it for me.”
While it’s conceivable that other writers were brought in to develop a script, Kurtzman’s comments indicate a lack of communication on this front, leading fans to wonder about the direction the franchise could have taken. However, given the passage of time, it appears that the possibility of an Amazing Spider-Man 3 will not come to fruition. The mantle of Spider-Man has since been embraced by Tom Holland, and the cinematic landscape has significantly shifted.
Future Possibilities for Garfield’s Spider-Man
Although the character of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man might not lead a standalone film again, there remains a flicker of hope for his return as a supporting character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).Despite Garfield’s frequent denials regarding any potential appearances, the fanbase continues to speculate fervently. Nevertheless, introducing an Amazing Spider-Man 3 now would likely confuse audiences who are already familiar with multiple portrayals of key characters, including various iterations of Spider-Man and the Green Goblin.
Tragically, for fans of Garfield’s portrayal, his Spider-Man may forever be remembered as a character cut short, without the franchise longevity many feel he rightfully deserved.
