Unlocking the New Features of Windows 11 KB5055625: Enhanced Taskbar Functionality
Exciting changes are coming to Windows 11 with the release of the KB5055625 update on the Dev Channel! This update introduces a sleeker Start menu design, free from the clutter of recommended applications, alongside a fantastic feature that allows your taskbar icons to resize automatically. Dubbed Show smaller taskbar buttons, this option can be accessed via Settings > System > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviour.
Introducing Automatic Scaling of Taskbar Icons
Windows 11 has historically limited customization options, specifically regarding taskbar and icon sizes. However, with KB5055625, users can now enjoy the ability to let taskbar icons scale down when screen real estate is tight, an important development for multitaskers. This new feature ensures that your favorite applications remain accessible, even when there are multiple apps running simultaneously. Previously, overflowing icons would have hidden behind the omnipresent three dots menu, but now, the system works more intuitively.

As part of our testing process, we observed the newly implemented feature in action, showcased below:

Taskbar Settings Overview
During our evaluation, Windows Latest identified three distinct toggles available for managing taskbar behavior:
- When the taskbar is full: The default setting allows the taskbar icons to automatically resize when space is limited. This practical feature is perfect for users who want to keep their apps open without unnecessary clicks or disruptions.
- Never: Prefer a more static approach? This option reverts back to the previous behavior, maintaining icon sizes as they are, ideal for those who dislike the smaller layouts. It’s crucial to note that only the icons change size; the taskbar’s width remains consistent.
- Always: For users who prefer their icons small at all times, selecting the “Always”setting ensures that your taskbar icons stay compact, allowing for a cleaner visual experience.
Customizing Your Taskbar Experience
Customizing your taskbar is straightforward—head to the “Taskbar behaviours”section under “Taskbar settings”and select from the aforementioned options for displaying smaller taskbar buttons. This flexibility can significantly enhance your user experience, especially for power users or those juggling multiple applications.

Looking Ahead: Microsoft’s Future Plans
While Microsoft is actively refining the taskbar auto-scaling feature, many users hope for even greater control over its overall scaling and the system tray. In contrast to the supportive customization options found in Windows 10, including the ability to manually adjust taskbar and icon sizes, Windows 11 presents some limitations. As it stands, moving the taskbar to alternate positions—such as the top, left, or right—is still not an available feature. Microsoft has stated that these restrictions are in place to maintain the fluidity of task animations.
As development continues, users of Windows 11 can anticipate improvements to the taskbar features, ideally achieving a balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal.
