Testing the AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 “Strix Halo” APU in 3DMark Time Spy: Radeon 8060S iGPU Delivers Over 3X Performance Boost Compared to Radeon 890M

AMD has recently put its high-performance Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 APU, known as “Strix Halo, ”through rigorous testing, revealing its impressive capabilities across various benchmarks. Equipped with the Radeon 8050S integrated GPU (iGPU), this processor demonstrates a remarkable leap in performance.

Astonishing Benchmark Results: The AMD Strix Halo “Ryzen AI MAX+ 395”

Last month, AMD introduced its cutting-edge mobile workstation solution, the Ryzen AI MAX, codenamed Strix Halo. This innovative APU lineup boasts exceptional specifications, including as many as 16 Zen 5 CPU cores and a powerful 40 RDNA 3.5 iGPU cores configuration, along with ample bandwidth and robust I/O features. As the release of these APUs in new laptops and desktops draws near, initial benchmark results have recently surfaced on Baidu Forums.

The leak reveals an alleged screenshot from the 3DMark Time Spy test, where the GPU tab identifies the “Radeon 8050S”while the CPU tab lists the “AMD Eng Sample: 100-000001243-50_Y.”Upon investigation, it appears that this APU is indeed the Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 but configured with the Radeon 8060S rather than the Radeon 8050S.

Key differences between the two GPUs include the Radeon 8060S featuring the full complement of 40 Compute Units (CUs) while the 8050S is limited to 32 CUs. Additionally, the tested CPU is powered by 16 Zen 5 cores, compared to the 12 cores in its counterpart, Ryzen AI MAX 390. The contrast in iGPU performance is notable, as the new APU offers more than double the iGPU cores compared to AMD’s earlier flagship, the Radeon 890M (16 CUs).An impressive bandwidth of up to 256 GB/s enhances this APU’s graphical performance considerably.

In the recent 3DMark Time Spy tests, the AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 achieved a comprehensive score of 9006, with a graphics score hitting 10, 106 and a CPU score of 5571 points.

While the CPU score may appear modest, the Radeon 8060S iGPU excels against the Radeon 890M, which scores an average of 3367 points on the 3DMark database. The 3x performance improvement is extraordinary, particularly considering that standard Strix architectures have a TDP ranging from 30 to 45W compared to the Strix Halo series, which can reach up to 120W.

The Radeon 8060S, featuring 40 Compute Units, showcases performance that rivals mainstream dedicated graphics cards, such as the Radeon RX 7600 and GeForce RTX 4060. This impressive capability for an iGPU suggests a powerful future for upcoming RDNA 4 architectures, which promise further enhancements in internal graphics efficiency for these APUs.

Looking ahead, we anticipate the release of AMD’s first Strix Halo-equipped PCs in the first half of 2025, promising enhanced specifications and pricing details for these high-performance workstation platforms.
