In a mere two days, Google is set to officially debut its Pixel 10 lineup, which will include the new Tensor G5 chipset. This upcoming SoC marks a significant advancement as it is the first to be mass-produced using the cutting-edge 3nm technology and is also the first in the series to be fabricated by TSMC, rather than Samsung. As anticipation builds ahead of the launch, it’s noteworthy that the Pixel 10 Pro XL, which features the new silicon, has been recently highlighted in an AnTuTu benchmark leak showing only a modest performance improvement over the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s Tensor G4. While these results do show some enhancement, competitors remain notably ahead in the performance race.

A Significant Performance Gap Between Tensor G5 and Competitors

The benchmark results shared by a Reddit user, HustlersPassion, reveal that the Pixel 10 Pro XL achieved a score of 1, 140, 286 points with the Tensor G5. In contrast, the Pixel 9 Pro XL equipped with the Tensor G4 managed 983, 628 points. Although the Tensor G5 is approximately 15.91% faster than its predecessor, this gain pales in comparison to the competition, particularly when considering that the leading smartphone on AnTuTu, the REDMAGIC 10 Pro with the Snapdragon 8 Elite, boasts an astonishing score of 2, 662, 615.

A closer look at the performance breakdown reveals that the most considerable improvement for the Tensor G5 is reflected in its multi-core performance, achieving 200, 770 points compared to less than half for the G4. This increase can likely be attributed to architectural upgrades stemming from TSMC’s advanced 3nm process and the integration of newer cores that provide a 36% performance boost in Geekbench 6’s multi-core category over the G4.

Despite these advancements, the Tensor G5 still struggles to keep pace with rivals like the Snapdragon 8 Elite, Dimensity 9400+, and Apple’s A18 Pro. However, benchmarking results only paint part of the picture. A Google executive, Soniya Jobanputra, has previously articulated that while the Tensor G4 was designed with a focus beyond benchmark dominance, the aim was to enhance user experience by addressing significant issues with previous iterations.

The Tensor family has traditionally recorded lower scores than alternative chipsets. Nevertheless, Google has consistently provided a streamlined Android experience with Pixel devices, which often utilize fewer system resources. Should Google successfully optimize the software alongside its hardware improvements, the Pixel 10 series might emerge as a compelling contender in the upcoming market landscape.
