Tennis controversies of the week: Miami Open champion Danielle Collins reiterates her stance on retirement, James Blake under fire after Casper Ruud bemoans lack of facilities at the tournament

Despite various reasons for being the centre of attention at the Miami Open, Danielle Collins not only achieved the biggest title of her career, but also put an end to any speculation about potentially rethinking her retirement later this season.

Despite Daria Kasatkina’s third-round defeat to Sorana Cristea in Miami, the match was marred by a faulty electronic call which once again sparked concerns about the excessive reliance on technology. Additionally, Holger Rune’s justification for his early exit from the tournament was met with disappointment.

The controversy surrounding Simona Halep’s doping scandal was brought back into the spotlight once more. The tournament director, James Blake, faced scrutiny over his competence following Casper Ruud’s criticism.

With that being said, let’s take a quick glance at the controversies that occurred during the previous week:

#1 – Tennis star Danielle Collins speaks out about gender inequality in sports retirement plans

Despite her impressive form throughout the week, Collins’s stellar campaign at the Miami Open ended with her first WTA 1000 title. She was frequently asked if she would reconsider retiring from the sport at the end of the season.

Collins declared in January that this will be her last year as a professional, as she plans to begin a family. She clarified her intentions after defeating Caroline Garcia in the semifinals of the Miami tournament. According to the American, her decision to retire would not have been questioned if she were a man.

“You know, I find it so interesting, because I kind of felt like when I was announcing my retirement, everyone has been so, like, congratulating me and so excited for me,”Collins said in her post-match press conference.

“But then on the other hand, I feel like I have had to justify my decision a lot. I feel like if I was a guy, I probably wouldn’t have to justify it that much,”she added.

Following her victory at the Miami Open, Collins is scheduled to participate in the Charleston Open. On Tuesday (April 2), she will face former World No. 2 Paula Badosa in the first round.

#2 – Controversy over Chris Evert’s comments on Danielle Collins’ retirement plans

Despite giving a definitive answer about retiring from professional tennis during her performance at the Miami Open, Collins was still approached by Evert who urged her to reconsider. Evert had sent a message of congratulations for her victory in the tournament.

“A big Hug and Congratulations to Danielle Collins in winning the #Miami Open. Spectacular play throughout the whole tournament….but….Are you really sure you want to retire?,”Chris Evert wrote on X.

Despite Collins recently clarifying her thoughts on the matter, the comment she made just days later was perceived negatively by some individuals.

#3 – Backlash ensues after James Blake brushes off Casper Ruud’s concerns at the Miami Open

Despite being known for his calm demeanor, Ruud was unable to control his temper when confronted with subpar facilities at the Miami Open. During his second round match against Luca Van Assche, he expressed his frustration to the chair umpire about the lack of water bottles and towels available. As a generally composed player on tour, this outburst was uncharacteristic of Ruud.

Blake, the tournament director, only added more fuel to the fire with his explanation of the issue.

“I wish it had been handled in a different way,”he told the Miami Herald. “The best way is to talk to me. Don’t go on the court, and rant and rave about it. But I totally understand, being a competitor, he was in the heat of the battle.”

“We’ve all had a bad day out on the court and said some things,”he said about Casper Ruud. “He had just gotten broken, and that’s frustrating time. So, I get it and no hard feelings.”

Fans were of the opinion that Blake did not adequately address Ruud’s legitimate concerns and that a tournament as prestigious as Miami’s should not have such shortcomings.

#4 – Controversial Electronic Line Call at the Miami Open Sparks Debate on Accuracy and Fairness

Despite defeating Daria Kasatkina 7-5, 6-2 in the third round of the Miami Open, Sorana Cirstea’s victory was marred by controversy. An erroneous electronic line call during a crucial moment provoked a strong reaction from the frustrated Russian player.

Despite Kasatkina’s argument, the umpire did not overrule the call for an ace that was later shown to be out by the camera, after Cirstea’s serve.

The entire situation had fans outraged and they believed Kasatkina was unfairly treated. This is not an uncommon occurrence on the tour, as similar incidents are brought to attention every few weeks.

#5 – Fans criticize Holger Rune’s excuses after early Miami Open loss

Despite not feeling well, Rune was determined to continue competing in the Miami Open. However, his hopes were crushed when Fabian Marozsan defeated him 6-1, 6-1 in the second round. Reflecting on his performance, the young Dane regretted not withdrawing from the tournament.

“Unfortunately this was the end of @miamiopen. I knew I wasn’t feeling 100% well today but I didn’t imagine my energy level would be so low. Looking back I should’ve pulled out.

“But it’s always difficult because I had been preparing and wanting to play for a week. Time to go back to Europe. Thanks for the support Miami,”Rune wrote on X (formerly Twitter).”

Despite his talent and results, Rune’s reasoning did not sit well with fans who believed it undermined his opponent’s performance on that day. The 20-year-old’s behavior has frequently caused controversy, despite his abilities on the court.

#6 – Grigor Dimitrov Sparks Controversy After Interaction with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner

In the quarterfinals of the Miami Open, Dimitrov achieved one of the most unforgettable victories of his career by defeating World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz 6-2, 6-4. The match was attended by numerous celebrities, among them Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

The Bulgarian proceeded to take a brief photo with the pair and briefly engaged in conversation with them. The reaction on social media was mixed, with some questioning his decision to align himself with Trump while others supported his actions.

Despite being defeated by Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-1 in the final, Dimitrov was able to secure the runner-up spot in Miami. This achievement also marked his return to the top 10 after a gap of over five years.

#7 – Shocking revelations in Simona Halep’s doping controversy leave fans stunned

Despite her doping scandal and initial four-year ban for testing positive for roxadustat, Halep remained determined to clear her name and return to the tour. She was eventually given a wildcard at the Miami Open, marking her official return to the tour after the conclusion of her case. Despite the challenges she faced, Halep maintained her innocence and successfully appealed the ban.

Despite her successful appeal resulting in a reduced ban of nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sports, journalist David Walsh has alleged in a recent article for The Times that crucial information regarding the level of roxadustat in Halep’s blood sample was overlooked by the organization.

Despite examining Walsh’s claims, certain fans were disappointed in Halep. They believed that the previous top-ranked player was given a pass and was being embraced with open arms despite involvement in a major scandal.
