Recent developments revealed that Tencent, the prominent Chinese technology conglomerate, has amplified its investment in Kadokawa, the parent company of FromSoftware, thereby inching closer to Sony’s significant equity stake. Tencent’s Increased Stake: A Strategic Initiative
According to a report from GamesIndustry, the reputable Japanese financial news outlet, Nikkei disclosed that Tencent has augmented its holdings in Kadokawa by 1.11%, elevating its total ownership to 7.97%.This development was confirmed by Tencent, which characterized the increase as part of a broader “capital business alliance”aimed at fostering collaboration between the firms.
Sony Remains the Dominant Shareholder
Despite Tencent’s recent acquisition of additional shares, it still doesn’t hold the majority stake in Kadokawa. Last December, a strategic alliance was solidified between Sony and Kadokawa, positioning Sony as the largest shareholder with approximately 10% of Kadokawa’s stock. This partnership is designed to aid Kadokawa in executing its ambitious Global Media Mix strategy, which seeks to expand various entertainment mediums worldwide, including anime and video games.
FromSoftware: A Jewel in Kadokawa’s Crown
Among the many game development studios under Kadokawa’s umbrella, FromSoftware stands out as the most renowned. This studio is notable for creating the acclaimed Souls series and is currently developing an exciting new project titled Elden Ring: Nightreign. This upcoming title aims to blend classic gameplay elements from the original Elden Ring with innovative roguelike mechanics, promising a cooperative experience that has sparked much anticipation.
Anticipation for Elden Ring: Nightreign
While the initial Closed Network Test (CNT) encountered some challenges, it successfully generated excitement for the distinctive evolution of the Souls gameplay style that Elden Ring: Nightreign proposes.
