On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, American rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine was taken into custody for allegedly breaching the conditions of his plea deal associated with his 2019 RICO case. As reported by Billboard, his arraignment took place the same day at a federal court in Manhattan.
Various outlets, including Vulture and ABC 7, confirmed that 6ix9ine, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, is currently being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, the same facility housing Diddy.
During the hearing, as noted by Matthew Russell Lee of Inner City Press, prosecutors contended that 6ix9ine traveled to Las Vegas without authorization, failed to comply with drug testing protocols, and tested positive for methamphetamine. Reportedly, he also arrived an hour late to his hearing on Tuesday.
In the defense’s response, attorney Lance Lazzaro asserted that Tekashi had valid permission to perform in Vegas. He also characterized the presence of meth in 6ix9ine’s system as a “mix-up,”attributing it to the rapper’s use of Adderall, which reportedly contains methamphetamine.
According to HipHopDX, the rapper will remain incarcerated until his next hearing set for November 12, 2024. Tekashi had previously discussed potential plans to sign with Kartel Music, but those plans may be postponed pending the outcome of the upcoming hearing.
For context, Daniel Hernandez, known as Tekashi 6ix9ine, pleaded guilty in 2019 to charges linked to orchestrating violence for the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods gang.
Tekashi 6ix9ine’s History of Legal Troubles
This incident is not the first legal challenge for the rapper. In 2018, he was arrested on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering.
In 2020, he testified against the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, resulting in the arrests of several former gang members, including a gang leader sentenced to 17 years for drug trafficking and racketeering.
His plea agreement granted him a lighter sentence of just two years.
In 2023, he faced arrest in the Dominican Republic for allegedly assaulting two producers. Moreover, reports from Newsweek indicated that he was arrested for domestic violence after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, singer Yailín la Más Viral.
Earlier this month, at the start of October, he spoke with TMZ about his plans to sign with Kartel Music, expressing his intent to create “Mexican regional music.”
During the TMZ interview, Tekashi mentioned:
“It’s not a record deal. It’s an exclusive tour deal that I’m doing in Central America, South America, United States, and Mexico, like, the exclusivity deal. You know I dominated the English market, you know, the hip-hop English music for a long time, and I did it to the highest level, so I think one of the gifts that God gave me was that I’m able to dominate in both demographics.”
After his late arrival to court on Tuesday, the judge remarked that 6ix9ine’s behavior indicated a “broader pattern”of misconduct. He will remain in custody until the next scheduled court appearance in November, with further updates anticipated.
