Matthew Lillard once again embodies the sinister character of William Afton in the much-anticipated sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. A recent teaser image showcases Lillard’s portrayal, igniting excitement among fans as they gear up for the film.
Inspired by Scott Cawthon’s acclaimed video game series, the original Five Nights at Freddy’s movie emerged as a commercial triumph, even becoming Blumhouse Productions’ top-grossing film. Following this success, a sequel was eagerly announced, and production is currently underway, with leaks from the set heightening anticipation. A new image recently shared provides fans a glimpse of Lillard’s character in action, further cementing his role.
Scheduled for release late this year, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 gathered more buzz when YouTuber Dawko hosted a live stream on January 25, 2025, aimed at raising funds for wildfire victims in Los Angeles, which displaced over 180, 000 individuals. During the stream, Dawko hinted at developments in the sequel, stating, “The FNAF 2 movie will blow your mind; get ready for some intense theorizing from all of you!”In the images shared, Lillard was seen giving audiences a thrilling hint of his role as he interacted with director Emma Tammi and fellow cast members, including Elizabeth Lail, who plays Vanessa Shelly. This moment reconfirms Lillard’s presence despite his character’s demise in the first film. Dawko remarked, “We’re getting William Afton flashbacks in FNAF 2, ” suggesting a deep dive into the character’s backstory.
During a previous interview, Lillard revealed that he had committed to a three-film contract for the FNAF franchise. When asked about his plans, he noted a scheduling conflict due to his commitment to Five Nights at Freddy’s: “It’s really exciting; I have a three-movie deal with Universal and Blumhouse. Unfortunately, that means I can’t make it to Philly this time, ” Lillard explained.
As a prequel, FNAF 2 allows for the inclusion of Afton via flashbacks, making Lillard’s involvement advantageous given his significance as the franchise’s main antagonist. His character drives the narrative behind the eerie happenings at Freddy’s Fazbear’s Pizza, and his return is crucial for expanding the complex lore of the series.
The storyline may explore Afton’s involvement in the mystery of the missing children, potentially adding depth to his character and illuminating his nefarious actions. Lillard’s dynamic portrayal of Afton, rich with charm and menace, received acclaim, and his return is anticipated to attract enthusiastic audiences when the film finally debuts.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 arrives in theaters on December 5, 2025.
