Introduction of Sensitive Content Detection

In a move to strengthen privacy, Microsoft has officially launched sensitive content detection in Teams. This functionality is designed to automatically identify and prevent the sharing of sensitive information during screen-sharing sessions. Such sensitive data includes, but is not limited to, credit card information, bank account details, social security numbers, passport identifiers, and taxpayer IDs.

How It Works

The sensitive content detection feature scans the screen being shared in real-time. If it detects any prohibited information, it triggers an alert to both the presenter and the meeting organizer. Furthermore, it prompts the presenter to cease screen sharing immediately, ensuring added layers of confidentiality. Importantly, attendees remain oblivious to this behind-the-scenes process, preserving a seamless meeting experience.

Accessibility and Integration

This feature is operational across web, mobile, and desktop versions of Teams; however, it necessitates a Teams Premium license for activation. Users can enable this option within the meeting settings by navigating to Advanced protection > Detect sensitive content during screen sharing. While the detection operates autonomously, it does not actively terminate screen sharing sessions to prevent unnecessary interruptions caused by potential false positives. Microsoft has designed this feature to act as a protective layer—like a “guardian angel”guarding your screen—allowing users to maintain control over their presentations while minimizing the risk of inadvertent data exposure.

Additional Screensharing Enhancements

This update is part of a broader initiative by Microsoft to enhance security features in Teams. Just last week, the company announced that Teams administrators would now have access to telemetry data concerning screen sharing. This feature will help ensure compliance and monitor for leakage of sensitive information to unauthorized external parties.
