Taking down The Chief, duo dominance & more – 4 WWE Champions who should lose their titles at WrestleMania 40 and 2 who should keep them
WrestleMania 40 is set to make history for multiple reasons. The event will feature a number of highly-anticipated title matches with significant implications for the future of WWE. On Night 1 of the show, fans can look forward to seeing The Rock and Roman Reigns team up in a tag team match.
If they emerge as the winners, the Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes match will be governed by the ‘Bloodline Rules’, meaning it will essentially be a no-disqualification bout. The numerous stipulations and conditions imposed on the match should ideally result in the brave hero overcoming the challenges set by the antagonists.
Furthermore, not only Reigns and his championship, but several other title holders should also be concerned about retaining their belts after WrestleMania 40. There are four champions who are likely to lose their titles in Philadelphia, while two others are expected to hold onto their championships at The Show of Shows.
#4. Logan Paul loses United States Championship title
Giving Logan Paul one of WWE’s major titles would have been a mistake, but a mid-card Championship run was still a possibility. He has exceeded expectations in both matches and promos, showcasing a natural talent that transcends traditional industry training.
Despite defeating Rey Mysterio for the title, it did not harm the chances of a rising new star. However, his reign has not been particularly noteworthy, leading to the belief that either Kevin Owens or Randy Orton should claim the title at WrestleMania.
There are numerous heels on SmackDown who could greatly benefit from defeating a competitor like Owens or the Viper. Later in the year, a veteran face may lose the title to a rising star such as Karrion Kross, Grayson Waller, or Santos Escobar.
#3. The Uncertain Fate of the Apocalypse
It would be an understatement to claim that the Judgment Day’s WrestleMania 40 match will be anything but chaotic. Finn Balor and Damian Priest will put their titles on the line in a ladder match against five other teams.
The possibility of a car crash is looming and there is a high likelihood of a title change. A victory over the top faction on RAW would greatly benefit a team such as DIY, New Catch Republic, or even potentially Grayson Waller and Austin Theory.
Just as the Bloodline before them experienced, the Judgment Day is ripe for the appearance of fractures. A loss of their titles at WrestleMania 40 would serve as a catalyst for this to occur. Additionally, the rule stating that both sets of titles must be retrieved suggests that a separation may be on the horizon.
#2. Why Gunther’s Record-Breaking Streak Should Continue at WrestleMania 40
Some may ponder on who will be the one to defeat Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship. Sami Zayn is the next in line for the task, but he may face the same outcome as the other wrestlers who have been defeated by The Ring General.
It is likely that Roman Reigns will soon relinquish his Championship, and Triple H has expertly established Gunther as a formidable villain. Despite Reigns’ reputation as a dominant champion with a winning streak, it is actually Gunther who has consistently dominated his opponents.
In order to maintain his mystique, The Ring General should choose to relinquish the title after successfully defending it at WrestleMania 40. While some may see this as a questionable move, he can still boast that he has never been defeated for the championship.
Keeping with his arrogance, this action would also give other stars the opportunity to compete for the title and allow Gunther to make his way into the main event scene.
#1. Mami dominates at WrestleMania 40
Despite Becky Lynch’s impressive performance as the rebellious challenger to Rhea Ripley, some argue that she excels even more as a pursuer. Her determination to obtain the title knows no bounds and has garnered the support of the WWE Universe.
Ripley continues to dominate as she receives cheers from the audience despite playing the role of a top villain on RAW. It would be logical for a title change to occur at The Show of Shows, but Mami is considered the rising star. Lynch still has a lot of fight left in her, but passing the torch to Rhea, similar to how Charlotte Flair did last year, will solidify Ripley’s position.
Despite putting up a strong fight and delivering a memorable performance, Rhea Ripley should continue her momentum at WrestleMania 40. There is also the looming threat of Liv Morgan seeking revenge.
#2. The Visionary is running out of steam
Despite successfully solidifying the prestige of the World Heavyweight title, Seth Rollins is currently juggling multiple responsibilities and facing a heavy workload leading up to WrestleMania 40.
Drew McIntyre has consistently reiterated to Rollins that his sole objective is to win the Championship, as he will team up with Cody Rhodes on Night 1 of WrestleMania 40 and then defend his title on Night 2 of the event.
In Philadelphia, McIntyre’s exceptional work as a heel should earn him a significant victory. If it happens, Rollins’s busy schedule could serve as a justification for his potential loss.
#1. The Era of Roman Reigns must come to an end in WWE
Despite the complexity of the ongoing feud between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, it would be a grave error for Reigns to defeat Rhodes once more. Following his loss at WrestleMania 39 due to interference from the Bloodline, the American Nightmare has been working tirelessly outside of the title scene for a full year.
After winning the 2024 Royal Rumble, he was able to earn another title shot. However, The Rock’s interference caused a disruption, resulting in WWE having to make last-minute changes to their plans.
Cody’s comeback has been centered around his ‘Finish The Story’ storyline, making it a disappointment if he ends up losing once again. Coincidentally, the tagline for WWE2K24 is also ‘Finish Your Story’, and with WrestleMania 40 approaching, it should be a monumental event in wrestling history.
It is crucial that the reigning Champion relinquishes his hold on the title during that event. Otherwise, two years of narrative development will have been in vain, merely serving to further elevate an individual who is already recognized as a legend.
