In a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, he asserted that the expansive world of Leonida—an imaginative depiction of Florida—was entirely crafted by hand without the involvement of AI technologies.

AI’s Role in Game Development at Take-Two

While Zelnick confirmed the absence of generative AI in the creation of GTA 6, he acknowledged that numerous AI-driven applications permeate Take-Two’s studios, enhancing operational efficiencies. He emphasized, “GenAI-powered tools are currently being employed across various projects to drive costs and time efficiencies.” Zelnick expressed his long-standing enthusiasm for integrating AI, revealing that Take-Two has consistently led in utilizing machine learning technologies throughout its development processes.

Handcrafted Worlds vs. Procedural Generation

In his remarks, Zelnick stressed the importance of human creativity in game development. He argued that while AI tools can facilitate certain aspects, they cannot independently create engaging entertainment content.“There’s no evidence AI can produce meaningful interactive worlds, ” he affirmed. Regarding GTA 6’s meticulous architecture, he maintained that the environments are carefully constructed “building by building, street by street, ” distinguishing Rockstar’s work from procedurally generated alternatives.

“Historically, we had to script every single action that a character engaged in. Now, we’re always going to need great writers, and we always will have plenty of scripting, but characters should be able to be trained on that very scripting that has been created by great writers and then interact in a way that feels more natural.”
