SZA to release leaked songs in the upcoming deluxe edition of ‘SOS’ album, calls out alleged leakers on X

The release of SZA’s deluxe edition album, Lana, was highly anticipated this year as a follow-up to her Grammy-winning album, SOS. Unfortunately, the artist was forced to make a difficult decision after the album was leaked on social media. In a now-deleted tweet from March 26 on X, SZA announced that she will be starting Lana from scratch.

“Yall leaked three songs from the deluxe. Atp, y’all can keep the throw aways and leaks. I’ll be starting LANA from scratch. Do not ask me about it again.”

SZA provided further updates on her plan on the morning of March 27, stating;

“Lana deserves more time and music no one’s ever heard before.”

In addition, she exposed Janessa as the individual who supposedly leaked the photos and audio, clarifying that they belonged to Lana. Her current intention is to gather the leaks and concentrate on her upcoming project.

Insights into SZA’s Creative Process for “Lana”

In August 2023, during an interview with Variety, SZA announced that she had added several new songs to SOS, making it a complete project. When discussing the inspiration behind the album’s title, she stated;

“It’s called Lana – my name but, it’s the first tattoo that I ever got, when I was 13. It was just 10 bucks a letter and I only had 40, so that became my nickname for no reason. ‘Lana’ is really just the B-side of SOS.”

Since it is a deluxe edition of her album, SOS, fans have been eagerly anticipating Lana’s release. On March 23, SOS received three Grammy Awards, including Best Progressive R&B album and Best R&B song, further adding to the excitement surrounding its release.

Despite ongoing leaks of her album, SZA has remained resilient. In a comprehensive Variety cover story published in 2023, she spoke out about the issue, stating;

“When people leak my songs, they ruin them. Then it’s not mine anymore; it’s actually yours. It’s something unfinished that you decided was ready to be shared. And it’s like, ‘Fuck you. Now I’m not releasing it.’ Play your leak, but you’re not gonna bully me into music.”

In 2023, she made the announcement that her song “Joni,”a tribute to Joni Mitchell, had been leaked and therefore she will not be releasing it officially. During her September 8 concert at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Lana was originally scheduled to perform seven to eight songs, which included tracks from SOS and CTRL as well as three unreleased songs titled “Boy from Detroit,””Saturn,”and “Diamond Boy.”

Despite the original plan to release the album in December 2023, SZA has not announced a new release date due to the recent leaks.
