Released on January 16, the trailer confirmed several speculated features of the Switch 2, such as a larger display and additional buttons. However, it fell short of providing detailed technical specifications. While the announcement mentioned backwards compatibility, fans believe there are deeper improvements that could be inferred from the trailer’s visuals.
Indie game developer Jerrel Dulay analyzed the Mario Kart sections of the reveal trailer in a YouTube video, arguing that the visual enhancements suggest a “significantly more powerful” system. He noted improvements in shadowing and highlights on characters and vehicles, indicating the presence of advanced, physically-based shaders, which are demanding on hardware. This level of graphical fidelity points to a system upgrade potentially comparable to the Xbox Series S.
Analyzing the Visual Enhancements in Mario Kart for Switch 2
Continuing his analysis, Dulay highlighted the advancement in in-game textures. A direct comparison between footage from the new Mario Kart and its predecessor, Mario Kart 8, showcased superior ground texture in terms of both resolution and variety. He suggested that maintaining high resolution across expansive textures likely necessitates an increase in RAM—speculating that the Switch 2 might boast between 12 to 16 GB. Such a RAM capacity aligns it with leading consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Dulay also emphasizes that the enhanced graphical capabilities of the Switch 2 will benefit not just gamers but developers as well. Increased power means that developers won’t need to compromise by downscaling games to fit the platform, allowing for more ambitious titles to be adapted for the console. Anticipation builds as Nintendo is expected to share more detailed specifications during the next Nintendo Direct set for April 2, and these early signs are indeed promising.
