Survivor 46: Jem reflects on being blindsided

On Wednesday, March 27 at 8 p.m. ET, Jem Hussain Adams made history as the first Siga member to be eliminated in episode 5 of Survivor season 46, which aired on CBS. In her conversation with Entertainment Weekly, she looked back on the Beware Advantage challenge that ultimately led to her departure from the competition. When questioned about her thoughts on her Siga teammate, Maria Shrime-Gonzalez, using both of her votes to vote her off, Jem remarked,

“It’s an honor to be blindsided.”

The discovery of the Beware Advantage idol is a major advantage for most players, but it can also be a disadvantage for others, as demonstrated by Jem. When the Beware Advantage idol was rehidden, Maria found it and used it to gain an additional vote, resulting in Jem’s blindsided elimination. Despite having an immunity challenge idol on hand, Jem was still sent home.

With 18 contestants at the start, the season is now down to 13 and eagerly anticipating the upcoming merge in the next episode. Just before this pivotal moment, Jem was eliminated, paving the way for the Beware Advantage to make its appearance.

Despite her Survivor tribemates repeatedly questioning her about the Beware Advantage idol, Jem tried to persuade them that she was on their side. However, she continued to deny any involvement with the idol. Her persistent efforts only worsened the trust between her and her teammates, leading to them not informing her about their votes to blindside her in the first elimination of the season.

Reflecting on the betrayal of her own clan and Maria using both of her votes against her, Jem expressed her feelings about the situation by saying,

“That’s wild. I’m honored. It’s an honor to be blindsided, but guess what? It is even a better honor to have two votes put on you — before you even make it to the merge.”

Although Jem was asked if she had considered telling Maria about finding the Beware Advantage idol, she firmly stated that she had not. The Survivor contestant explained that she would have made the same decision if she were still playing the game. However, she acknowledged that revealing her secret may have potentially helped her avoid elimination.

As the episode came to a close, Jem made the decision to align herself with the men and attempted to persuade Ben Katzman and Tim Spicer of her loyalty. Meanwhile, Charlie Davis and Maria found themselves torn between the two sides and struggled to make a decision. It was no surprise that Charlie leaned towards supporting Ben, as their bond had grown stronger throughout the previous episodes. On the other hand, Maria was determined to stand with the women and eliminate Ben from the game.

During the initial blindside of season 46 of Survivor, the women sided with the men and ultimately saved Ben, resulting in four votes against Jem. When asked about the vote, she commented,

“I think Charlie wanted to work with Ben from what it looked like, and he convinced Maria. But yeah, I couldn’t tell you.”

Jem was devastated when her teammates voted her out. She had always made sure to “provide”them with food and felt proud that they were well-fed because of her. However, she was disappointed that her hard work went unrecognized, ultimately leading to their decision to vote her out.

As Survivor season 46 approaches the merge, the competition is becoming increasingly ruthless with each passing day. Viewers can catch new episodes every Wednesday at 8 pm ET on CBS.
