A contemporary study spearheaded by Counterpoint Research surveyed respondents primarily from India, indicating that regional preferences may vary. Despite this, the consensus around processor performance as the leading factor is widely accepted. No consumer desires to invest in a high-end smartphone only to encounter lackluster performance. Shivani Parashar, a Senior Research Analyst, provided insight into this trend:
“Processor performance has become the key factor for consumers when purchasing a smartphone, as 84% of the respondents are familiar with the role of chipsets in a smartphone. Buyers are willing to pay a premium for faster and more efficient devices. As GenAI continues to evolve, the smartphone experience is set to become even more personalized. Chipset companies are driving innovation as the industry shifts focus from simple connectivity to AI-powered processors that deliver smarter, faster and more personalized.”
Following processor performance, battery life emerged as the second most critical attribute for purchasers. Smartphone manufacturers have consequently prioritized larger battery capacities and optimizations in software to enhance user satisfaction. For instance, various Chinese companies are investing in advanced silicon-carbon battery technology, enabling devices to sport battery capacities of 6, 000mAh or more without added bulk.
Storage capacity ranks next in importance, closely followed by camera quality. Although frequent software updates are appreciated by consumers, they did not emerge as a decisive factor in the survey, likely due to concerns that an update might adversely impact device performance. This apprehension partly explains why companies like OnePlus have opted against extending software support for seven years, fearing that older hardware may falter under new features.
