Surprising Film Influences on James Gunn’s ‘Superman’

With the highly anticipated release of Superman’s trailer, fans are eagerly discovering more about James Gunn’s vision for the iconic superhero. A particularly intriguing element stems from Gunn’s own admissions regarding the influences guiding this cinematic endeavor.

The launch of the trailer coincided with a series of insightful quotes and details shared by Gunn and other sources. Journalists were granted access to a trailer event hosted at Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, where they could pose questions directly to Gunn regarding the film’s production. During the discussions about capturing the essence of flight on camera, Gunn mentioned an unexpected source of inspiration.

According to ComicBook, Gunn stated, “I wrote up this big document on action and what our philosophy is of action and how we shoot it and what it is, and keeping it alive in the air, as well as on the ground. And to be able to shoot stuff in the sky as if we were shooting it … Because everything was rougher, like, it’s in Guardians of the Galaxy, like it’s in The Suicide Squad. And being able to shoot stuff in the sky like that is really hard.”

The significance of this flying technique cannot be overstated. The film’s lead, David Corenswet, must deliver a performance that convinces audiences of Superman’s ability to soar through the skies. Remarkably, one major influence for this portrayal is the critically acclaimed film, Top Gun: Maverick. This 2022 sequel to the classic 1986 film rejuvenated cinema audiences and served as a potent reminder of how powerful storytelling can resonate. It also inspired Gunn’s approach to aerial cinematography.

James Gunn Finds Inspiration in Top Gun: Maverick

In his statements, Gunn elaborated on how his detailed document on action sequences specifically referenced Maverick to convey the desired dynamic of Superman’s flight. “We took a lot from films like Top Gun: Maverick, which, we are shooting flying things. We shoot a lot of our action with actual drones flying in and around Superman and the people that he’s flying with,” Gunn explained, highlighting the innovative techniques utilized on sound stages to capture these sequences.

He further elaborated on the creativity involved in the filming process. “We got these really small, crazy drones now. We’ve got some of the best flyers in the world here who are working with it. And so we use those guys a lot and everything’s planned out with me, as it always is. But at the same time, I’ve gotten even more into finding new stuff on the set and new moments and exploring that stuff, finding magic where it is,” he shared.

James Gunn’s insights are incredibly exciting for fans, especially those already invested in the Superman legacy. His declaration of Top Gun: Maverick as a key influence further amplifies enthusiasm for the upcoming film. With the release date approaching, anticipation continues to build; many are left asking, is July here yet? We are all eager for a fresh take on Clark Kent!
