Surface Duo 2 gets a major update with many new features and improvements

Microsoft began rolling out firmware updates for its Surface devices in June 2022 with the mass release of the second-generation Surface Duo. The update weighs in at over 700MB and brings many new features and improvements, such as support for third-party apps on the Glance Bar.

Important: Surface firmware updates are one-way and cannot be removed. Before installing any update, be sure to review the list of known bugs.

What’s new in the June 2022 Firmware Update for Surface Duo 2?

  • The update addresses the scenarios described in the June 2022 Android Security Bulletin.

New Surface Duo 2 features:

  • Glance Bar shows notifications for third party communication apps.
  • Enables haptic feedback control in the Camera app settings.
  • Enables automatic firmware updates for the Slim Pen 2 when paired via Bluetooth. For more information, see Use the Surface Slim Pen with Surface Duo.
  • Enables Slim Pen 2 to automatically pair when drawing on any screen (requires Slim Pen 2 to have firmware version 5.133.139 or later and software version 5.148.139 or later).
  • Enables optimized charging to help reduce battery aging by charging the battery gradually over night.
  • Enables support for Device Firmware Configuration Interface (DFCI) to control device usage.

Other improvements and changes:

  • Improves device stability.
  • Improves system performance.
  • Improves touch sensitivity.
  • Improves the usability of the camera.
  • Improves in-app camera performance in dual screen mode for apps with dynamic orientation requirements.

Microsoft says there are no known issues in today’s version. The June 2022 firmware update is available for all Surface Duo 2 configurations version 2022.418.08.

As for the original Surface Duo, it received a fairly modest update , version 2022.418.56, which adds only Android security fixes and general stability improvements. Both generations of the Surface Duo remain on Android 11, with Android 12 not currently in sight.
