Supermassive Games Announces Layoffs and a Major Game Delay
Supermassive Games recently disclosed that it has downsized its workforce by 36 employees. This decision, made to “adapt our team structure to better align”with the evolving dynamics of the video game industry, aims to position the studio for future challenges.
The announcement was shared via the official X account of Supermassive Games, where the studio expressed the difficulty of the decision.“This decision was not taken lightly, and we know this will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone. Our absolute priority will be to offer full support to all those affected, ”the statement read.
Directive 8020’s Postponement
Alongside the layoffs, the studio also confirmed a significant delay to its anticipated game, Directive 8020. Initially slated for release on October 2, 2025, this title will now debut sometime in the “first half of 2026.”The announcement was made following its showcasing at Gamescom 2024 last year. Supermassive Games noted, “the response to the game so far has been fantastic, and this additional time will help us deliver the very best experience for our fans. We’re deeply grateful for the patience and support of our community.”

Implications for Other Projects
Although Directive 8020 has faced significant delays, it isn’t the only title in Supermassive’s line-up. The studio is also set to release Little Nightmares III on October 10, 2025. In the same statement regarding the layoffs, Supermassive assured fans that these changes would “have no impact on the development of Little Nightmares III.”
Previous Layoffs and Industry Challenges
This isn’t the first time Supermassive Games has had to make tough decisions regarding its staff. In February 2024, the studio laid off a third of its employees, attributing this move to the ongoing challenges presented by the changing landscape of the video game sector.
As the video gaming landscape continues to evolve, studios like Supermassive will need to navigate these turbulent waters carefully, balancing financial sustainability with the need to deliver engaging and innovative gaming experiences.
