Pathea Games Launches Superball: A New 3v3 Arcade Hero Football Experience
Pathea Games, renowned for titles such as My Time at Portia and My Time at Sandrock, has unexpectedly released a new game called Superball. This exciting free-to-play 3v3 arcade hero football game arrives on PC and Xbox Series X/S without prior announcement, reminiscent of the surprise launches typically seen from studios like Velan, known for Knockout City, or Psyonix with their spin-off creations.
A Fusion of Genres: Gameplay Overview
Superball was unveiled during the ID@Xbox and IGN Showcase, drawing comparisons to Rocket League and Overwatch. Players navigate through arenas using a giant ball, combining elements of football with hero-based gameplay.
Character Classes
In this vibrant universe, participants choose from 17 unique characters, each fitting into one of three strategic roles:
- Goalkeepers: These robust characters are designed to defend the net, equipped with shield abilities and long-range shot potential.
- Midfielders: Agile and versatile, midfielders excel at both offense and defense, balancing the team’s dynamics.
- Forwards: Focused solely on scoring, these powerhouse characters dominate the offensive side of gameplay.
A Journey to Release
Guo Yuheng, the lead producer, expressed excitement in a press release: “After years of iteration, sleepless nights, and many Chongqing hot summers, our team at Pathea is thrilled to finally bring Superball to players. We’re incredibly grateful to our community for their patience and for sticking with us on this journey. What started as a PvP mech combat game evolved into something much bigger and polished when a football-inspired mode captured the team’s imagination. We can’t wait to see everyone jump into the arenas, unleash their favorite heroes, and help shape the future of Superball together with us.”
Initially titled Super Buckyball Tournament, development began in 2019 before transitioning to the current name in July 2024. Despite several delays and numerous beta tests, the game has finally launched, though there are no confirmations yet regarding its availability on PlayStation or Nintendo consoles in the future.
Diverse Game Modes and Monetization
Alongside the standard 3v3 mode, Superball offers four additional gameplay modes: Slam Dunk, Dodgeball, Icebreaker, and Divine Path. As a free-to-play title, it introduces a Season 1 battle pass, but with a unique twist—players can only experience most characters for the first 72 hours after signing up. Following this period, they must unlock additional characters through gameplay.
To make the most of the initial trial, players receive one voucher to permanently unlock a character of their choice from the start. After the expiration of the trial period, the remaining heroes will require grinding to obtain.
Availability on Xbox Game Pass
For those subscribed to Xbox Game Pass, Superball is also accessible through this service, though the fact that it is free-to-play renders this point somewhat inconsequential.
