Arcade Archives Welcomes Super Spacefortress Macross
In the latest addition to the acclaimed Arcade Archives series, Hamster has launched Super Spacefortress Macross. This classic arcade shooter, released originally in 1992, is inspired by the animated film Macross: Do You Remember Love? and is now accessible on the Japanese PlayStation Store and the Nintendo eShop for approximately 1,500 yen (around $9.65).
Gameplay and Features
Players can immerse themselves in frantic battles with up to two players piloting the legendary VF-1 Valkyries. Taking on the roles of Hikaru Ichijo and Maximillian Jenius, they must defend against the onslaught of Zentradi aliens. Consistent with the original anime narrative, the Variable Fighters can seamlessly transform among three distinct modes: Fighter, Gerwalk, and Battroid. Additionally, a rarely accessible fourth mode, the Armored Battroid, is available for extensive player engagement.
For those exploring the game in its international format, an “international original mode”featuring the English logo resides alongside the original Japanese version. The game supports languages such as French, Italian, German, and Spanish, though these primarily pertain to the manual and emulator settings, rather than in-game dialogue.
Rich Legacy and Localization History
The genesis of this arcade title predates its wider release by decades. Initially launched in Japan in September 1992 by Banpresto under the title Super Dimension Fortress Macross, the game made its North American debut just a month later through Fabtek, known as Super Spacefortress Macross. This game stands out as one of the few adaptations of Macross: Do You Remember Love? to be offered with a faithful English localization.
Recent developments surrounding the historic 2021 agreement between Big West and Harmony Gold have paved the way for the global distribution of future Macross entries. However, this arrangement specifically impacts its inaugural entry alongside the adaptation of Do You Remember Love? into Robotech. Notably, Bushiroad’s upcoming title, Macross -Shooting Insight-, while available internationally, has had to limit content pertaining to Do You Remember Love? to Japan-only DLCs to fulfill contract stipulations.
Availability
The Arcade Archives version of Super Spacefortress Macross can now be digitally purchased for both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch exclusively through their respective Japanese online stores.
