Sucker Punch Creative Director Expresses Desire to Develop More Infamous Games

Sucker Punch Productions: A Legacy in PlayStation Gaming

As one of the most established studios within the PlayStation universe, Sucker Punch Productions has built an impressive legacy, captivating gamers with a series of iconic titles and characters that have become synonymous with the PlayStation brand. During the PlayStation 3 era, the studio gained significant recognition through its hit franchise, Infamous. This series of action-adventure games made a notable impact and continued on into the PlayStation 4 era. However, since the release of a major title alongside a downloadable content (DLC) expansion at the start of the PS4 generation, Infamous has remained largely silent.

Transitioning to New Frontiers: Ghost of Tsushima

After the closure of the Infamous chapter, Sucker Punch turned its focus to Ghost of Tsushima, a decision that proved to be highly successful on multiple fronts. This game has not only sold well but has also garnered acclaim from both players and critics, reinforcing the studio’s reputation for quality gaming experiences. Despite the success of Ghost of Tsushima, many fans of the Infamous series continue to express their desire for a return to that beloved franchise.

Insights from Sucker Punch’s Creative Directors

In a recent interview with GameInformer, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, the creative minds behind the studio, discussed various aspects of their upcoming project, Ghost of Yotei. During the conversation, Fox was queried about the possibility of revisiting the Infamous series. His response was optimistic yet grounded:

“I would love to work on more Infamous. I would love to see a trilogy rerelease, but Sucker Punch is a one game at a time shop, and right now we are very focused on finishing Ghost of Yotei.”

A History of Focused Development

Sucker Punch Productions has maintained a unique development philosophy throughout its history, dedicating its resources to one game series at a time. The journey began on the PlayStation 2 with Sly Cooper, which earned the studio significant acclaim through three main titles before the series transitioned to a different developer for its PS3 continuation. Following Sly Cooper, Sucker Punch launched the Infamous series, which featured two installments on PS3, one expansive PS4 title, and a shorter DLC extension, culminating in a robust gaming experience.

The Uncertain Future of Infamous

While Ghost of Tsushima became the cornerstone of Sucker Punch’s PS4 catalog, it’s worth noting that this marks only the second time the studio has developed a franchise that has crossed two console generations. Despite the longstanding love fans have for Infamous, Sucker Punch has not made significant strides towards revisiting or remastering the series. As an ardent fan of Infamous, I find myself yearning for a comprehensive trilogy re-release and an entirely new fourth installment. However, based on the studio’s current trajectory, such outcomes appear uncertain.

Hopes for the Future

Nevertheless, there remains a glimmer of hope. Perhaps, with enough interest and support from fans like myself alongside Nate Fox’s sentiment, we may witness a return to the Infamous franchise in the future. As the art of game development evolves, the possibilities are endless, and so too are the hopes of fans worldwide.
