Subnautica 2 Release Date Set for 2025 with Co-op Gameplay and Day-One Launch on Xbox Game Pass

During today’s Xbox Partner Preview event, Microsoft delivered an exciting surprise to fans of the Subnautica series by announcing that the next installment is set to launch next year. Titled Subnautica 2, this latest game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one for both Xbox console and PC subscribers. Be sure to check out the cinematic launch trailer above.

Unknown Worlds Entertainment, the studio responsible for this underwater survival adventure, revealed that Subnautica 2 will again utilize early access, specifically via the Xbox Game Preview program upon its release.

“By launching through the Xbox Game Preview program, we open a fantastic avenue for players to provide feedback,”the studio commented. “This feedback was invaluable in shaping both Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, and we are excited to continue this tradition with Subnautica 2!”

In a groundbreaking shift for the franchise, gamers will depart from Planet 4546B—the iconic setting of both Subnautica and its standalone expansion Below Zero. The sequel introduces an entirely new planet to explore and marks the addition of cooperative multiplayer gameplay, allowing up to four players to join forces. This long-requested feature has finally made its way into the game.

“Adding the option for cooperative gameplay alongside a new world was the perfect moment to implement this feature. We believe it will challenge your creativity and adaptability as you journey through the environment together,”the developer explained. “However, for those who relish the tranquil beauty of playing alone, Subnautica 2 will still provide that cherished experience and uphold its challenges.”
