Yellowjackets: A Gripping Tale Inspired by Real-Life Events

The plot unfolds across dual timelines: one set in 1996 and the other in the present. The 1996 storyline follows a talented girls’ soccer team traveling to Seattle for a game, whose journey takes a terrifying turn when their plane crashes.

Stranded in the wilderness for nearly nineteen months, the young women struggle to survive as winter approaches. Initially determined to adapt, they ultimately resort to cannibalism as food becomes scarce. The harrowing experience results in the loss of some lives while others emerge, deeply scarred by trauma.

In present-day, a reunion is held for the survivors at their school, bringing past traumas and resentments to the surface as they confront one another once again. The series expertly intertwines the past and present, showcasing how early experiences inform current lives.

While Yellowjackets is not based on a singular real-life event, many influences were acknowledged by the creators. In a conversation with NPR on December 31, 2021, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson cited both the book Lord of the Flies and the film Alive as significant influences on the show.

William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies addresses themes of civilization versus savagery, while the 1993 film Alive recounts the tragic Andes Flight Disaster where survivors resorted to cannibalism to endure the harsh conditions after a plane crash. There are also connections to the historical case of the Donner Party, as reported by Forbes on November 19, 2021.
