Overview of I Am Not a Monster: The Lois Riess Murders

This gripping true crime documentary chronicles the actions of Lois Riess, a woman from Minnesota who murdered her husband, David Riess, in 2018. She shot him multiple times, subsequently fleeing their home with a significant amount of money and his vehicle.

In the same year, Lois killed Pamela Hutchinson, who bore a resemblance to her. It is alleged that Lois aimed to usurp Pamela’s identity, leading to the murder. Following the killing, she stole Pamela’s car and drained funds from her bank account.

Following her apprehension in Texas in 2019, Lois confessed to the murder of Pamela and later admitted to the homicide of her husband in 2020. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for each of these crimes.

This documentary marks the first occasion Lois Riess will appear on screen, recounting her perspective on the murders and the motivations behind her shocking actions.

As summarized by Rotten Tomatoes, the show’s synopsis states:

“Lois and David Riess appear to lead an ordinary life as devoted parents and business owners in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, until David’s lifeless body is found and Lois absconds.”

The synopsis further explains:

“Now incarcerated, Lois reflects on her childhood and upbringing, revealing a disturbing psychological profile of a woman grappling with numerous emotional challenges. Yet, her systematic actions post-murder suggest a calculated nature, particularly when another victim surfaces.”
