On April 4, 2024, UNICEF Laos released the third installment of Stray Kids’ Felix’s volunteer work in the landlocked country on their official YouTube Channel. The video highlighted the singer’s involvement in Water and Sanitation Health (WASH) projects at a local school, causing a stir on various social media platforms.
In February 2024, Stray Kids’ Felix traveled to Laos to participate in volunteer work for the United Nations Children’s Fund. He proudly wore the organization’s t-shirt and blue badge as he spent his Lunar New Year holiday helping the children of the country.
Felix from Stray Kids helps Laos Kids learn Korean and English phrases
Felix from Stray Kids made a visit to Laos Village Elementary School, where he was greeted with excitement by the children who even adorned him with ribbons around his neck.
After attending his welcome ceremony, the singer proceeded to visit classrooms where he sat among the children and learned Laotian characters. In return, Felix taught them a few words in both Korean and English, such as ‘Hello’ (“Annyeong”) and ‘I love you’ (“Saranghae”) in Korean, as well as how to say ‘Thank you’ in English. He enthusiastically praised and encouraged the children by clapping for them whenever they spelled a word correctly, and encouraged other students to do the same.
In addition to his role as a teacher, he also instructed the children in the choreography from one of the Stray Kids’ songs, MIROH. As he invited the children to join him in the dance, four of them eagerly stepped forward and attempted to follow his lead. He also demonstrated how to play the drum, and as they all gathered around, he encouraged everyone in the classroom to hit their benches and join in the dance.
After that, he headed out to the playground and entertained the children by blowing bubbles. He further demonstrated his engagement with the group by joining them in washing their hands. The idol’s joy was evident as the children sang the UNICEF handwashing and sanitation slogan and playfully splashed water on each other’s faces. He even picked up the Laotian ‘washing your hands slogan’ from the children.
During his conversation with two children, Ali and Putali, Felix from Stray Kids inquired about their aspirations, motivations, and the resources provided by UNICEF at their school. Putali shared her dream of becoming a doctor in order to assist people, while Ali expressed his desire to become a translator and communicate with the local community.
The idol was filled with joy to converse with them and expressed his hope that their dreams would one day come to fruition. He also praised the children and paid close attention to their words. In addition, he inquired about the school’s water supply system.
“There’s a water supply facility installed by UNICEF. Has the school improved since it was installed? Now that you have clean fresh water, do you drink more than before?”
The kids replied that the situation had definitely gotten better.
As Felix’s time at the school came to an end, he expressed the following words as a member of Stray Kids:
“First of all, as I played with the children, they really enjoyed it and were happy, and just seeing that made me happy, and I think I had more fun playing than the children. The children were so full of energy that I ended up using more energy than I thought, but it wasn’t difficult at all. It was so nice. After playing with the kids, I went to wash my hands because there was soap on them.”
Additionally, he reiterated:
“There was a hand-washing system, and they even made up a song to have while washing their hands. Just looking at these small actions, I felt like [UNICEF] was helping a lot, so it was great. I was happy. When I saw these children for the first time and saw their pure smiles, I felt happy without realizing it. Just being with them brings me great happiness. I think they will be remembered for a very long time.”
At the conclusion of the video, Felix from Stray Kids expressed his well wishes for the children to lead a healthy and happy life. He also assured them that he would return and took the time to teach them how to say “have a safe trip”in English. Additionally, a Baci Ceremony was organized by the school authorities where numerous students and teachers tied white strings around Felix’s hands as a symbol of good luck.
Felix’s Impact as a UNICEF Ambassador for Stray Kids
In January 2024, Stray Kids’ Felix became the youngest member to join UNICEF’s Honors Club. His generous donation of over 100 million won has greatly contributed to the betterment of children in Laos, who have been struggling with various challenges such as inadequate drinking water, nutrition, and sanitation.
