Strategies to Defeat Captain Klinger in Metaphor ReFantazio

Strategies to Defeat Captain Klinger in Metaphor ReFantazio

Captain Klinger is one of the initial bosses in Metaphor ReFantazio, playing a significant role in establishing the game’s narrative. Similar to Persona 5, this Atlus RPG features characters who exploit their positions and influence to maintain their power. Captain Klinger exemplifies this, as you discover he has committed numerous atrocities to keep Prince Louis in control.

As an accomplice to Prince Louis, a vile contender for the throne of Metaphor ReFantazio, Captain Klinger embodies the corruption pervasive in the game’s world.

In Metaphor ReFantazio, Captain Klinger doesn’t face you alone; he comes accompanied by two Mages who enhance his abilities. Targeting the Mages first is crucial—they won’t be respawned. Approach this encounter similarly to the initial Seymour battle in Final Fantasy X and eliminate his allies first. Fortunately, you are not alone in this fight; Strohl and the newly empowered Grius will aid you.

For example, you could use Protagonist (Seeker), Strohl (Warrior), and Strohl (No Archetype) in your party. While Grius acts on his own, he will prioritize attacking. Deploy a powerful Diagonal Slash from Strohl and a Cyc Spell from the Hero to swiftly take down one Mage.

Although the remaining Mage will still have a chance to act and Grius may not defeat him in one hit, you are in decent shape. Captain Klinger is likely to respond with Mage Fire during this boss fight in Metaphor ReFantazio. The Mage Guard might enhance Klinger’s defense, but this shouldn’t cause significant concern. Focus on eliminating the remaining Mage and then shift your attention entirely to Captain Klinger.

While Klinger is not particularly vulnerable to any of your current attacks, defeating him isn’t overly difficult. His Mage Fire may hit Strohl (who has resistance), but it deals minimal damage overall. If you manage to score a critical hit with Diagonal Slash, you’ll land an additional strike, as exploiting enemy weaknesses or landing critical hits consumes only half an attack pip.

However, if Captain Klinger targets the Hero with a Fire attack, he gains an advantage due to the Hero’s weakness, allowing Klinger to attack again in Metaphor ReFantazio. When his health drops to 10%-15%, he will exclaim “Die, die, die!” and unleash Mage Flames, an area-of-effect (AOE) attack.

This will ensure him another hit due to the Hero’s vulnerability. Just a couple more blows should suffice to bring him down, clearing your exit from the Nord Mines. Defeating him yields 150 EXP, 150 A-EXP, 300 MAG, 600 Money, and a Captain’s Uniform.

Metaphor ReFantazio is set to launch on October 11, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows.
