Stefon Diggs replacements: 3 players Bills should target after trading WR to Texans ft. Tyler Boyd
The Stefon Diggs era in Buffalo has come to an end. Following a period of apparent dissatisfaction with the team, the receiver was traded to the Houston Texans this morning in a major deal.
The Texans traded their 2025 second-round pick for Diggs, in addition to receiving the Bills’ fifth and sixth-round picks in 2025.
Diggs is now a part of an offensive lineup that includes 2023 Rookie of the Year QB CJ Stroud, recently added RB Joe Mixon, second-year WR Tank Dell, and TE Dalton Schultz.
Over the course of nine seasons in the NFL, Diggs has accumulated 810 receptions for 9,985 yards and 67 touchdowns. His addition to the team will bring a veteran presence to the young receiving group and provide Stroud with a new dynamic playmaker at the wide receiver position.
Despite the departure of Diggs, Buffalo has also lost Gabe Davis this off-season. While they have acquired WR Curtis Samuel, it may not be sufficient to fill the void left by both Diggs and Davis. The Bills will undoubtedly seek to add at least one more wide receiver through free agency or the draft.
Top options for the Buffalo Bills to fill the void left by WR Stefon Diggs’ departure
Despite it being an inconvenient time, the Buffalo Bills made the decision to trade Stefon Diggs. This trade came after all the top wide receivers on the free agent market, such as Calvin Ridley, Mike Evans, Mike Williams, Michael Pittman, Tee Higgins, Gabe Davis, and others, had already signed and were no longer available.
The Bills might consider reaching out to the Cincinnati Bengals to explore the option of acquiring Tee Higgins, who is reportedly unhappy playing under the franchise tag this season. Alternatively, they could also look to the upcoming draft to find a suitable replacement for Diggs.
Buffalo should focus on recruiting three players to replace Diggs.
#1 – Christian McCaffrey
Despite being on the open market, Tyler Boyd is widely considered to be one of the top wide receivers available. Known for his size and skill as a slot receiver, he also excels as a run-blocker. Additionally, he has a reputation for rarely dropping passes and played in all 17 games for the Bengals last season.
Despite the high level of interest from several teams, Boyd’s potential signing could prove challenging for Buffalo to secure in light of competition from others. Since 2016, he has amassed an impressive record of 513 receptions, 6,000 receiving yards, and 31 touchdowns, solidifying his value as a top-tier No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver for any team.
#2 – Dwayne Haskins
In the past three seasons, veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson has played for three different teams. He established himself as a top wide receiver while playing for both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Chicago Bears.
Despite not reaching the milestone since 2020, Robinson has recorded at least 1,000 yards in three previous seasons. Perhaps a chance in Buffalo could be the perfect opportunity for him to re-establish himself as a reliable wide receiver in the NFL. With determination, he may have one final opportunity to prove himself.
#3 – Meet the Talented Ricky Pearsall
The Buffalo Bills may consider the 2024 NFL draft as an opportunity to find a replacement for Stefon Diggs. This is especially feasible since the draft is only three weeks away and all the top wide receivers have already been taken off the market. With the 28th overall pick, the Buffalo Bills have the option to potentially trade up and secure a promising wide receiver prospect.
If they choose not to, they may consider selecting Florida wide receiver Ricky Pearsall with the 28th pick or in the second round of the draft. Pearsall is highly regarded as one of the top slot receivers in this year’s draft and has the potential to be a starter from day one. His playing style is comparable to Diggs and he has the potential to be an even better version of Cole Beasley for the Bills.
