State of Decay 2 Final Update: New Features and Gated Content Released

Over six years ago, Undead Labs introduced State of Decay 2, a unique survival sandbox game that, unlike many others, emphasized community-building in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by zombies. Following an announcement in September, it was noted that the development team would be shifting their focus to the third installment after years of providing free updates that significantly enhanced the game experience. Today, State of Decay 2 has received its final content update for both PC and Xbox platforms.

Named Legacy Awaits, update 38 comes packed with new features, an extensive range of bug fixes, the unlocking of previously restricted content that was only available during promotions, and a variety of new outfits for players to discover in the game world.

Key enhancements in this update include the impact of water resistance on vehicle movement in lakes and rivers, quick access to community inventories, revised mechanics for zombie spawns related to noise, and more. Below are some of the detailed changes:

  • Vehicle Speed in Water: Water resistance will now slow down vehicles when traversing lakes and rivers, making vehicle selection crucial. For instance, a 4×4 will prove more effective in watery conditions than a Sports Coupe.
  • Streamlined Community Inventories: Players can now access Survivor inventories directly from the Community screen, facilitating easier item viewing and transferring. This eliminates the need to search through your base for specific Survivors!
  • Updated Zombie Spawning: Zombie spawns triggered by failed searches or loud noise events have been modified. These events will now only draw nearby zombies instead of spawning new ones.
  • Improved Character Climbing Mechanics: The distance for characters attempting to climb down from ledges has been decreased. Also, characters won’t climb down inadvertently when the player is aiming, reducing potential frustrations.
  • New Rucksack Options: Players can now deposit rucksacks at claimed Landmark Outposts.

In addition to a variety of new survivor outfits available from containers scattered across the maps, Undead Labs is making earlier timed-exclusive items accessible to all players. This includes gear from various crossover events like Age of Empires II and Sea of Thieves, as well as seasonal items from updates such as Halloween and Christmas.

State of Decay 2

“Throughout your years playing State of Decay 2, you may be aware that we are also diligently working on the future of the franchise,”the studio mentioned in its final blog post regarding the series. “Our goal is to create the ultimate zombie survival simulation, which means we are reallocating our efforts and resources to develop State of Decay 3.”

While State of Decay 3 does not yet have an official release date, it showcased a new trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this year, providing glimpses of gameplay. Undead Labs is collaborating with Obsidian Entertainment and other studios to enhance the forthcoming entry, which promises advanced co-op features and a narrative set further along the timeline of the zombie apocalypse.
