Bethesda, the developer behind Starfield, has generally been transparent regarding these shortcomings, often providing insights into both technical limitations and design decisions that have influenced gameplay. Among the aspects that some fans might not have recognized as missing is the presence of gore, which detracts from the gravitas of the game’s combat scenarios.

In a recent interview with KIWI TALKZ, Dennis Mejillones, a senior artist at Bethesda, outlined the reasons for reducing gore in Starfield. He indicated that it primarily stemmed from technical challenges related to implementing realistic gore effects, such as decapitations. This complexity was especially pronounced given the game’s diverse armor types, including various space suits, and adding elements like “meat caps”(the remnants left after decapitation) were deemed unfeasible.

Moreover, Mejillones pointed out that thematic coherence played a crucial role in this decision. Bethesda aimed for a more realistic and grounded tone in Starfield, contrasting the stylistic approaches seen in the Fallout series and Skyrim. He explained:

“Fallout is very stylized in that regard. It’s meant to be. That’s part of the tongue-in-cheek humour […] For Starfield, it was definitely meant to be more lo-fi and realistic. We were inspired a lot by things like The Expanse and Star Trek, so I think it just didn’t fit thematically.”

This rationale raises some questions, as the sources of inspiration mentioned often include less graphic violence. Despite serious moments and a somewhat realistic aesthetic, Starfield retains the signature absurdity and charm prevalent in Bethesda’s earlier franchises. Hence, removing visceral content may feel inconsistent with the nature of the gameplay, particularly given the violent actions players can engage in.

However, it is disappointing if Bethesda imposed limits on its creative vision for fear it conflicted with thematic goals. The result is a remarkable, albeit slightly less intense, gaming experience. While Starfield remains a strong title, the integration of even modest levels of gore could have offered a more gratifying and impactful combat system.
