Among the enigmatic characters in Stardew Valley, the Dwarf stands out as a unique and solitary figure. Located in the depths of the mines, he is the only member of his mysterious race that players will encounter throughout their journey.
Although players can engage with the Dwarf and foster a friendship, building this connection presents its own challenges. Notably, it requires mastering a completely different language. Furthermore, befriending the Dwarf does not yield the same rewards as relationships with other Pelican Town residents. Nonetheless, this aspect enriches the gameplay, providing a whimsical touch to the player’s narrative.
Updated January 8, 2024 by Demaris Oxman: Recent updates to Stardew Valley have introduced various enhancements to the mechanics surrounding friendship with NPCs. The addition of the Movie Theater in version 1.5 created a new venue for players to bond with their friends. Moreover, updates in version 1.6 refined gift preferences and reactions. For those aspiring to befriend the Dwarf, this guide provides essential insights.
How to Meet the Dwarf
To find the Dwarf, players should head to the mines. Just to the right of the entrance on the first floor, they’ll discover a large boulder. This obstacle can be cleared using a copper pickaxe or higher. Alternatively, players can opt to blow it up using a bomb. Once inside, players will spot the Dwarf with his unique shop setup.
Mastering Dwarvish
Upon the first encounter, players will discover that the Dwarf speaks a language unfamiliar to humans. While players can attempt to interact and offer gifts, these actions won’t influence friendship levels initially. To communicate effectively with the Dwarf, players must first collect all four Dwarf Scrolls. These artifacts should be donated to the Museum, after which Gunther will provide a Dwarvish Translation Guide in reward.
With the translation guide in hand, players can return to the mines to converse with the Dwarf. This newfound ability to communicate opens the door to friendship and allows players to purchase wares from his shop.
Dwarf Gift Guide
Building a friendship with the Dwarf primarily hinges on gift-giving, similar to interacting with human residents of Pelican Town. Players can give a maximum of two gifts per week to the Dwarf. Notably, his birthday falls on Summer 22, making gifts given on this special day yield eight times the usual friendship points.
Loved Gifts
Certain items resonate deeply with the Dwarf, boosting friendship by a remarkable 80 points. Many of these treasures can be found while mining, making exploration rewarding.
- Gemstones:
- Amethyst
- Aquamarine
- Exit
- Ruby
- Topaz
- Emerald
- All universal loves
Liked Gifts
Players can also give gifts that are merely liked by the Dwarf, which will increase friendship by 45 points. Many of these items can also be found within the mines.
- All Universal Likes
- All Artifacts
Disliked & Hated Gifts
Certain items should be avoided when gifting to the Dwarf, as they lead to a decrease in friendship. Hated gifts create a greater negative impact compared to Disliked gifts, so it’s wise to steer clear of both categories.
- Mushrooms and all other foraged items.
- All universal hates, excluding Artifacts.
Movie Theater Preferences
Following the establishment of the Movie Theater, players can invite the Dwarf to watch a film by offering him a ticket. Similar to other NPCs, the Dwarf has distinct preferences for his cinematic experience, which will influence the friendship points earned.
Happily, the Dwarf enjoys all movie options. However, he is more selective regarding snacks. He Loves items like Stardrop Sorbet and Rock Candy, while he Likes sweets such as Cotton Candy, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jawbreaker, Salmon Burger, Sour Slimes, and Star Cookie. Snacking on anything else may not please him.
