Notice: This article contains significant SPOILERS for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1
While Star Wars previously scaled back Kylo Ren’s quest to obtain the Sith wayfinder, intriguing aspects of this mission are re-emerging in the franchise’s official lore. Set after the events of The Last Jedi, Marvel’s new Legacy of Vader series depicts Kylo’s journey to Mustafar nearly a year prior to his acquisition of the artifact leading to Exegol, which is highlighted at the onset of Rise of Skywalker. In this narrative, Kylo aims to reach his grandfather’s fortress and obliterate it, seeking to sever ties with his dark heritage.
In Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1, crafted by Charles Soule and Luke Ross, Kylo Ren is hell-bent on completely eradicating his past, mirroring his advice to Rey in The Last Jedi. His mission to destroy remnants of Darth Vader’s legacy becomes evident as he encounters familiar obstacles along the way.

Unveiling Concept Art of the Original Vision

Concept art from artist Jon McCoy reveals that Kylo Ren’s pursuit of the wayfinder in Rise of Skywalker was intended to be a more extensive saga than what viewers experienced. In the final version, Kylo battles a small group of warriors before discovering the wayfinder on Mustafar; however, the original plan included a pivotal interaction with the enigmatic Force entity, the Eye of Webbish Bog, who would aid him in locating the artifact.
This encounter has since been integrated into the expanded edition of the Rise of Skywalker novelization and appears in the comics, where the Eye of Webbish Bog interacts with Darth Vader, imparting wisdom and insights about the future. Additionally, McCoy’s concept artwork indicates that Kylo Ren’s quest was to include multiple locations and battles against various foes, featuring several depictions of him engaged in combat up an extended staircase.

Confronting Warriors at Darth Vader’s Castle

Notably, Legacy of Vader showcases Kylo Ren ascending a staircase upon arriving at Mustafar, intent on demolishing his grandfather’s castle, a powerful symbol of his past that he wishes to obliterate. He quickly encounters a group of warriors who impede his progression, prompting Kylo to unleash his ferocity and confront his foes. This sequence effectively aligns with the previously established concept art, albeit set in a timeframe post-The Last Jedi, contrary to the original plan for the beginning of Rise of Skywalker.
Demonstrating his formidable prowess, Kylo Ren utilizes the Force to deflect arrows from the warriors, subsequently engaging them with his iconic lightsaber, driven by a deep-seated rage. In a moment of declaration, he proclaims that his reign as Supreme Leader is just beginning, as long as he can eradicate the past that haunts him. Yet, upon reaching the castle, Kylo is confronted with a potentially transformative path.

Upon encountering Vaneé, one of Vader’s former aides, inside the castle, Kylo Ren is presented with insights on transforming his turbulent past into a source of strength—a lesson his grandfather mastered during his own existence. This pivotal moment suggests that Kylo is on the brink of a transformative phase in his journey before he resumes the search for the Sith wayfinder. The Legacy of Vader series creatively reintegrates the concepts from the originally envisioned, more elaborate crusade that was ultimately omitted from Rise of Skywalker.
