Initially, fans speculated about Neel’s species, with many believing he belonged to the same race as the beloved Max Reebo from Return of the Jedi.

Discovering Neel’s True Species

In earlier discussions, the showrunners had confirmed that Neel and Max Reebo were not of the same lineage, yet the specific name of Neel’s species remained a mystery. In a recent interview with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, Watts and Ford debated whether to unveil Neel’s species, ultimately opting for discretion. However, shortly after, Ford disclosed that Neel is officially classified as a Myykian.

As shared by Leland Chee, a key figure in maintaining the Star Wars Holocron continuity database, the galaxy hosts a variety of elephantine species. Thus, the creation of a Myykian for Neel aligns well with the expansive lore. Despite some fans’ preference for established species, speculative theories arose, including one suggesting that Neel was a younger iteration of an elephant-like character from Captain EO, a non-canonical 4D short film produced for Disney parks featuring Michael Jackson.

A Departure from Nostalgia

Interestingly, many fans draw a distinction between Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte. In the latter, viewers anticipated a deeper connection to the larger narrative, hoping for reveals involving Jude Law’s antagonist or the mysterious “Great Work”on the planet At Attin. Contrary to these expectations, Skeleton Crew wrapped up its storyline with minimal ties to established lore, providing a refreshing hiatus from the franchise’s frequent reliance on nostalgia.
