Exploring the Jedi Order Pre-Clones: A New Era Unfolds in Star Wars: Jedi Knights
The Star Wars franchise is poised to transport fans back to a pivotal era before the prequel trilogy, spotlighting Qui-Gon Jinn as he navigates a formidable threat. This upcoming narrative promises to reshape the Jedi Order, leaving it vulnerable to the manipulative grasp of Palpatine. While many of the franchise’s stories explore the Jedi embroiled in conflict, this new direction presents an opportunity to delve into the Order’s functions prior to the infamous Clone Wars, shedding light on what ultimately rendered them susceptible to Palpatine’s malevolent influence.
Introducing Star Wars: Jedi Knights
Set to debut this March, the comic series Star Wars: Jedi Knights will investigate how the Jedi maintained peace throughout the galaxy before the Sith’s resurgence. A recent announcement from Marvel teases a critical question: “Who is the enigmatic new villain targeting Qui-Gon Jinn for assassination, and how will this threat challenge the Jedi Order to adapt?”While an evolution within the Jedi ranks appears beneficial, it is well-known that their eventual descent into bureaucracy and half-measures paved the way for Palpatine’s cunning plans, culminating in the infamous Order 66.

Dynamic Storytelling Among the Jedi
Each installment of Star Wars: Jedi Knights will showcase a unique pairing of Jedi tackling diverse challenges, all while gradually revealing a central antagonist who connects their stories. Writer Marc Guggenheim emphasizes the series’ intent to illustrate the Jedi’s function as peacekeepers prior to Palpatine’s orchestration of the Clone Wars, detailing how the conflict undermined their core values:
I love the idea that the Jedi are the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. But there are surprisingly few examples of that out there – mainly because the Jedi get sucked into the Clone Wars. I’m as much of a fan of the Clone Wars as the next guy, but I really craved seeing the Jedi doing their thing on a non-war footing. That’s the great appeal of this new Jedi Knights series: We really get a chance to see what the Jedi did before the Clone Wars and their eventual fall.
Qui-Gon Jinn’s Hidden Enemy: A Path to Corruption
A Familiar Face Returns

Sheev Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, engineered the Clone Wars to instigate chaos throughout the galaxy, effectively eroding Jedi philosophy in the process. The brutal conflict compelled the Jedi to confront their darker urges and complicate their relationships, moving away from their traditionally respected conduct. Rather than simply shifting into the role of warriors, Palpatine’s influence built upon an earlier transformation instigated by the series’ new villain targeting Qui-Gon Jinn.
As Star Wars: Jedi Knights promises a depiction of the Jedi’s evolution, fans will witness the Order’s transition from its noble ideals to an institution poised for manipulation. This irony is especially poignant considering Qui-Gon Jinn’s nature — a Jedi noted for his contemplative stance on the organization’s rigid approaches.
An additional element of excitement surrounds the character Atha Prime, who first emerged in concept art for Return of the Jedi and acted as the antagonist for Kenner’s unfinished The Epic Continues toy line. Editor Mark Paniccia highlights Atha Prime’s significance, exclaiming, “You’ve literally never seen so much lightsaber action in a comic book!”

Portrayed as a tyrannical leader from an enigmatic world, Atha Prime may be the key antagonist threatening Qui-Gon Jinn and provoking the Jedi Order’s transformative descent. However, whether this character serves as the primary force behind this evolution remains to be seen. Readers can anticipate the answers when Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1 arrives in stores.
Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1 is set to launch on March 12, 2025, from Marvel Comics.
