In my view, this series may very well be the finest offering since Andor.

Interestingly, it was not immediately apparent that the show would center on the Jedi. Over the past few years, the trajectory of Star Wars stories on television, and to a degree in film, has shifted away from the dynamics between Jedi and Sith. Instead, a focus has emerged around diverse characters and narratives. Notably, some of the most engaging Star Wars series, like The Mandalorian featuring Din Djarin and Andor with Cassian Andor, spotlight characters who do not possess the Force. However, the co-creators of Skeleton Crew hinted at introducing a “whole new kind of Jedi,”and one character truly embodied this promise.

At the outset, Jod Na Nawood appeared to be the embodiment of Skeleton Crew’s “whole new kind of Jedi.”Speculation ran rife, fueled by Jude Law’s enigmatic hints and the peculiar absence of a lightsaber with Jod’s action figure. However, the trailer’s portrayal of Wim addressing Jod as a Jedi lent more credibility to this expectation.

This assumption was questioned early in the series, as Jod’s actions as a somewhat egocentric and harsh character displayed behaviors akin to a pirate, casting doubt on his alignment with Jedi principles. Additionally, his tentative use of the Force led some viewers to theorize that he might have utilized alternative methods, such as magnets, to manipulate metal objects, as suggested by the character Fern. Nevertheless, it was later established that Jod was indeed Force-sensitive, albeit his journey was far from conventional.

In the climactic moments of Skeleton Crew, viewers learned that Jod had undergone brief training with a Jedi who ultimately was slain before his eyes. This tragic backstory explains his limited experience with the Force and his fragmented understanding of Jedi teachings. While Jod does not embody the traditional Jedi archetype, Skeleton Crew undeniably presents another compelling Jedi figure who breaks new ground within the franchise.

From the very first scenes of Skeleton Crew, Wim was portrayed as an enthusiastic admirer of the Jedi, often engaging in imaginative lightsaber duels with Neel and expressing a desire to discover a Jedi Temple on At Attin. However, it quickly became evident that Wim lacked Force sensitivity, particularly highlighted by the blunders he made while wielding a lightsaber he acquired on Lanupa. Yet, despite lacking innate powers, Wim personified the “whole new kind of Jedi”concept throughout the show.

This sentiment first emerged in episode 6 when Wim assisted KB with her medical challenges. Following this moment of selflessness, KB referred to Wim as a Jedi, a heartwarming acknowledgment that underscored his compassionate nature. KB’s insight was spot on: being a Jedi encompasses a spirit of empathy, altruism, and the readiness to assist others. This theory was further corroborated in the series finale, wherein Wim risked everything to save his friend Fern.

Ultimately, being a Jedi surpasses the mere possession of the Force; it embodies traits like compassion and selflessness.

Though Wim may differ from traditional Jedi figures, this was precisely the intention of Skeleton Crew. Its fresh perspective and commitment to essential Star Wars themes affirm the series’ innovative spirit. Skeleton Crew successfully fulfilled its promise of a “whole new kind of Jedi.”This fresh viewpoint on what defines a Jedi invites viewers to consider the deeper qualities that embody heroism in the Star Wars saga.
