The CEO of Saber Interactive, Matthew Karch, has promised fans of Star Wars KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic) that the remake of the game is still in progress and making good progress. In an interview with IGN, Karch mentioned the studio’s dedication to surpassing consumer expectations, which suggests that the game may take several more years to complete. Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors has also acknowledged that the game will require more than a year of development.
As many of our readers may recall, the official announcement for the Star Wars KOTOR remake was made during September 2021’s PlayStation Showcase, following Jason Schreier’s revelation of the game’s existence in April. Aspyr Media, known for their re-releases of classic Star Wars games, was tasked with developing the game. While not much information was shared about the project, the studio’s aim was to rebuild the game from scratch using the latest technology, while staying faithful to the original’s groundbreaking level of innovation and beloved storyline. Additionally, Sony was involved in the project financially, securing a console exclusive deal for the game on their PlayStation 5 (with plans for a PC release as well).
Regrettably, the progress of the project was impeded in July 2022 when the demo/vertical slice presentation to Sony and Lucasfilm was turned down, resulting in the Star Wars KOTOR remake being postponed. The subsequent month, Embracer (the parent company of Aspyr Media) announced that the game had been transferred to a different developer within the organization. It was later revealed that the studio in charge was Saber, renowned for titles such as World War Z, Snowrunner, Evil Dead: The Game, and the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
Despite Saber’s detachment from the Embracer Group, which has resulted in the acquisition of studios such as 4A Games, 3D Realms, New World Interactive, Mad Head Games, Zen Studios, and Slipgate Ironworks, Embracer will still publish the upcoming Star Wars KOTOR remake.
The initial version of the game followed a turn-based format and was based on the d20-based Star Wars Roleplaying Game ruleset from Wizards of the Coast. It is safe to assume that this remake will also undergo a similar redesign, similar to the one seen in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.
